Support in IB Internal Assessment

IB Internal Assessment support – help that genuinely changes your final grade

Internal Assessment (IA) is one of the most underestimated yet most important components of the International Baccalaureate. It typically accounts for 20–30% of the final grade in each IB DP subject, and in practice it very often determines whether a student finishes a subject with a 6 or a 7. The problem is that students usually “understand the topic” but cannot write to specific markscheme criteria – and it is alignment with IBO criteria, not knowledge alone, that earns points.

At MonPat Education we guide students through the entire IA process – from the initial idea, through selecting a methodology, to the final review. We work with people who have been through the IB themselves, studied at Cambridge, Oxford, and other leading universities, and many of whom serve as examiners. This means we know exactly what an IBO moderator is looking for – and we translate that into stable, predictable predicted grades that open doors to the best universities. The first consultation is free of charge – it allows us to assess where the student currently stands and what can realistically still be improved.

Who is IB Internal Assessment support for

Our help is used primarily by IB Diploma Programme students who:

  • are starting work on their IA and do not know how to choose a topic that meets IBO requirements,
  • already have a draft, but their teacher has flagged issues with structure, methodology, or the Reflection,
  • are aiming for HL grades of 6–7 because they are applying to medicine, biochemistry, engineering, economics, or natural sciences,
  • are working on IA in several subjects simultaneously and need help managing their time and priorities,
  • feel that the gap between “understanding the topic” and “writing to the markscheme” is enormous – and do not want to lose points on something that can be improved with the right technique.

The IA IB tutoring service is also used by parents who have had no exposure to the IB system and need someone who “knows the system from the inside,” can explain the assessment structure, and show what concrete steps their child needs to take in the coming weeks.

Why Internal Assessment matters so much

The IA is not just an “extra task.” It is the student’s own research project, assessed first by the teacher and then moderated externally by IBO. Its weight means that a weak IA makes it practically impossible to achieve a 7 in a subject, even if the student performs brilliantly in the external examinations. In the sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) the IA is worth approximately 20%, and in some language and arts subjects even more.

This has a direct impact on university admissions. Dream programmes – medicine in the UK, Ireland, or Italy; biochemistry; Natural Sciences at Cambridge; engineering at Imperial College London; economics at LSE or Bocconi – require specific predicted grades at HL. Often that means 7, 7, 6, and the IA is one of the elements that can be raised most quickly and in a controlled way. You cannot sit the exams early; the IA, however, can indeed be refined.

In the long run, the logic is simple: a better IB result → a better university → a stronger academic and professional network → genuinely different career opportunities. This is not an empty slogan – it is an observation drawn from over a decade of working with our alumni, who today study at Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, and Imperial. Investing in the quality of your IA in the second year of the DP pays dividends for decades to come.

How we work – a methodology that delivers predictable results

Working on an IA requires two things simultaneously: subject-matter understanding and an understanding of how an IBO moderator thinks. Our tutors combine both, because they have been through the IB themselves and know the system from an examiner’s perspective. Every process begins with an analysis of the markscheme and the assessment criteria for the specific subject – because a Biology IA is assessed in a completely different way from a History or Business Management IA.

The work proceeds in stages: first we select a topic that meets IBO criteria and is realistic given the time and resources available to the student. We then plan the methodology (experiment, sources, data), work on the structure of the report or Individual Oral, and at the end focus on the Reflection section – where students most commonly lose points. After each session, the student and parent receive brief feedback with specific next steps, so at every stage it is clear exactly where the work stands.

Why parents and students choose us:

  • A clear action plan – from the very first session the student knows what to do and when, so the IA gets done without last-minute rushing.
  • Feedback after every session – a short, concrete written summary for the student and parent, with no vague generalities.
  • Contact between sessions – we respond promptly, because we know that IA deadlines do not wait.
  • Work on real examples – we analyse past papers, exemplar IAs, and examiner comments.
  • Predicted grade optimisation – we work deliberately towards the specific grade the student needs for their application.
  • Individual revision plan – the IA is built into a broader preparation schedule for the May examinations.

Scope of support within IA tutoring

  • selecting an IA topic that meets IBO criteria and has strong potential for a high grade,
  • developing the research question and methodology (experiments, sources, data analysis),
  • mentoring throughout the writing process – section by section, following the structure required for the given subject,
  • detailed work on the Reflection section, where students most commonly lose points,
  • analysis of the markscheme and comparison of the work against exemplars graded at 7,
  • reviews of successive drafts with specific, point-by-point feedback,
  • support with specific IA formats – from scientific research reports to Individual Orals in language subjects,
  • preparation for IBO moderation and avoidance of common academic pitfalls,
  • integration of IA work with preparation for external examinations and other DP components.

We support students across all subject groups – from IB Mathematics, IB Chemistry, and IB Physics, through IB Business Management and IB Economics, to IB History, IB English, and IB Polish.

The IA is just the beginning – how it fits into your university application

A strong IA is not an end in itself. It is one element of a coherent strategy designed to get a student into their dream university. At MonPat Education we treat how to write the Internal Assessment as a strategic question, not merely a craft one – because the IA result feeds directly into predicted grades, and predicted grades determine whether you receive an offer from Oxbridge, Imperial, LSE, Bocconi, or leading American universities at all.

That is why we offer our students much more than help with a single piece of work. We support Extended Essays and TOK, manage applications to the Ivy League and Oxbridge, assist with applications to the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Denmark, and the USA. We prepare students for entrance examinations such as the TSA Oxford, IMAT, UCAT, and LNAT, as well as for IELTS and TOEFL language tests.

Many of our students start with a single element – the IA itself – and then move seamlessly into a comprehensive application strategy: building a candidate profile, mock interviews, personal statement editing, and entrance test preparation. Our alumni today study at Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, and Imperial College London, as well as at leading Polish universities. If that is the trajectory you are aiming for, it is worth starting the conversation early.

Book a free initial consultation – we will analyse the current state of your IA, identify what can realistically still be improved before submission, and show you how to integrate IA preparation into a broader plan for your examinations and your application to your dream university.
