Contemporary Poland and World Knowledge Competition

The Olympiad of Knowledge about Poland and the Contemporary World – preparation with mentors who know the system from the inside

Many talented students drop out at the second stage of the Olympiad of Knowledge about Poland and the Contemporary World not because they study too little, but because school-based learning of WOS does not prepare them for analytical thinking, working with academic literature, and arguing at first-year university level. OWPSW is one of the oldest and most prestigious olympiads in Poland – organised by the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies of the University of Warsaw since 1959 – and requires a completely different approach than a high school test.

At MonPat Education we run preparation for the Olympiad of Knowledge about Poland and the Contemporary World in an individual format, with mentors who are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and top Polish universities, and often also former laureates and authors of olympiad questions. We work on the basis of archive sets, extended theory, and simulations of all three stages – so that the student enters the competition with a plan, not with hope.

The first consultation is free – it serves to assess the student’s level, scope of knowledge, and set a realistic preparation strategy.

Who is this programme for

Training preparing for OWPSW is aimed at students of high schools, technical schools, and vocational schools, who want something more than the implementation of the school core curriculum. It is an offer for ambitious people – those who are thinking about studying law, international relations, political science, sociology, journalism, or national security, and the olympiad is to be a real strengthening of their candidate profile.

In our experience, we see one recurring pattern: the student is “good at school”, has high WOS grades, reads more than their peers – but has never been trained problem-based. Olympiads require an academic level, analytical thinking, and solving non-standard tasks, and this simply cannot be practised at the board. Our Olympiad of Knowledge about Poland and the Contemporary World as the goal of work with a mentor fills exactly this gap.

The programme also works well for students who plan to study abroad and want to build a strong application profile – in the UK, USA, or the Netherlands, a laureate or finalist of a national olympiad is a very clear signal to the admissions committee.

Why OWPSW is important – short and long perspective

OWPSW belongs to the group of olympiads recognised in admissions to higher education institutions. The title of laureate or finalist most often means an index for the desired studies, the maximum number of points for related subjects, or exemption from part of the entrance exams. For fields such as law at UW, international relations at UJ, or SGH, it can be the difference between “I got in” and “I was 3 points short”.

The second dimension is studies abroad. Admissions committees at Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, or Dutch universities assess not only grades, but also the depth of understanding and the candidate’s academic profile. Success in the olympiad shows that the student can work with literature, argue, and think critically – exactly the competencies required in the Personal Statement and during the admissions interview.

Looking long term: better substantive preparation means a better university, a stronger network of academic and professional contacts, an easier start in the job market. Working with a mentor on Olympiad of Knowledge about Poland and the Contemporary World training is an investment whose effects go far beyond the Matura itself.

How we work – methodology and what students and parents really value

Every student starts with a diagnosis – we check the scope of knowledge, strengths and weaknesses, knowledge of issues related to the political system, law, international relations, and economics. On this basis, we build an individual work map for the entire olympiad season. We conduct lessons in a format similar to a university seminar: we discuss a text, analyse cases, and practise argumentation “live”.

We work on archive tasks from previous editions of OWPSW, introduce academic literature going beyond the core curriculum (publications in the field of political science, constitutional law, international relations), and conduct systematic analysis of errors. We devote a separate module to the oral stage – this is often the decisive moment of the olympiad, and many students stumble on it not for lack of knowledge, but for lack of self-presentation training.

Why do parents and students choose us? Because they get specifics instead of generalities. After each session, we send brief feedback with information about what went well, what we are working on next week, and what materials are worth working through independently. The mentor is in constant contact between lessons – if a question about a task or a doubt before the eliminations arises, the answer comes quickly. The parent has a clear picture of what stage of preparation the child is at, and the student works in a predictable, demanding, but supportive environment.

Scope of support in preparing for OWPSW

As part of the programme preparing for the Olympiad of Knowledge about Poland and the Contemporary World we provide:

  • Analysis of the scope of material of the current edition of the olympiad and an individual diagnosis of the student’s level.
  • Work on archive tasks from the school, regional, and central stages of recent editions.
  • Extended theory – issues related to the political system, law, economics, and international relations going beyond WOS in high school, based on academic literature.
  • Training in reasoning and argumentation – analysis of source texts, interpretation of data, formulating theses.
  • Systematic analysis of errors and strategies for solving problem tasks.
  • Preparation for the oral stage – simulations, work on the structure of a statement, self-presentation, and resistance to difficult questions from the committee.
  • Project consultations on the independent work required at selected stages of the olympiad.
  • Constant contact with the mentor between lessons and a brief report after each session.

OWPSW as an element of a wider educational strategy

The olympiad is very rarely an end in itself – most often it is one element of a larger plan: getting into the dream course, building a profile for a foreign application, having a stronger starting position in the job market. That is why at MonPat Education we look more broadly than just at one olympiad.

If the student is thinking about studying in the United Kingdom, success in OWPSW perfectly strengthens an application for courses such as Politics, PPE, Law, or International Relations – we then combine it with preparation for the LNAT or TSA Oxford exam and work on the Personal Statement. For people aiming at studies in the Netherlands, Ireland, or the USA, we propose advice on choosing the field of study and academic mentoring.

Students who stay in the Polish system prepare with us in parallel for the Matura – including for the extended WOS, history, Polish, or English. Students of IB and A-Level high schools will find with us support in the IB programme and A-Levels, as well as help in other subject olympiads. Thanks to this, work on one olympiad fits into a coherent, multi-year educational strategy – without chaos and without randomness.

Book a free consultation

The first step is a conversation. During the free consultation, together with the student and parent, we assess the current level of knowledge, set a realistic goal for this olympiad season, and show what the process of working with a mentor will look like. With no obligation – with a concrete answer as to whether and to what extent it is worth starting preparation.
