Geography Olympiad
Geography olympiad – professional preparation with mentors from Cambridge and Oxford
The geography olympiad is one of the most prestigious subject competitions in Poland, organized since 1974 under the auspices of the Polish Geographical Society. It requires, however, a completely different approach from school lessons. It demands a level close to the first year of university, independent research work, and analytical thinking. Many talented students fall at successive stages not because they lack knowledge, but because they have never been trained in solving problem-based tasks and writing in an academic style.
At MonPat Education we offer geography olympiad preparation led by mentors who have themselves navigated the demanding examination systems of the world’s best universities – Cambridge, Oxford, and other leading institutions. We combine extended theory, work on archived problems, and geographical thinking training, so that the student enters each stage of the competition with a clear understanding of the assessment mechanics and confidence in their competencies.
The first consultation is completely free – during it we assess the student’s potential, discuss the research paper topic for the school stage, and propose an individual preparation plan.

Who is geography olympiad preparation for?
Our program is aimed at post-primary school students who want more than the core curriculum. It is a path for ambitious young people who are looking for a demanding but supportive environment and who treat the geography competition as a real step towards a university place and a strong differentiator in a foreign application.
Those who most commonly use our support include:
- first-year secondary school students who want to plan three years of preparation and gradually build an olympiad profile,
- matura-year students for whom a medal or laureate title means exemption from part of the geography matura and a guaranteed place on selected programs,
- students planning to study abroad – in the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, or the US – where olympiad success significantly strengthens a candidate’s profile,
- students who are “good at school” but have never worked on non-standard problems and need problem-solving training,
- students interested in programs such as geography, geology, spatial economics, environmental protection, economics, or international relations.
Why it is worth preparing for the geography olympiad
Success in the geography olympiad is not just a prestigious certificate. It is a real investment in the student’s educational and professional future. The title of finalist or laureate opens doors to a guaranteed place at many Polish universities, grants exemption from the geography matura exam (with a result of 100%), and significantly strengthens an application for studies abroad.
In admissions to universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial College London, and Dutch or Danish universities, what counts is not just grades but above all depth of understanding and the ability to think independently. Admissions committees know very well what a Polish subject olympiad is – a laureate title tells them that the candidate can work with academic literature, formulate research hypotheses, and defend their theses in an oral discussion. These are precisely the competencies assessed during an Oxbridge interview.
The best participants in the Polish competition represent the country at the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo), organized since 1996 under the auspices of the International Geographical Union. The iGeo scope covers environmental geography and sustainable development, economic geography, globalization, food economy, urban geography, urban planning, spatial planning, population change, and the geography of culture and regional identities. Participating in iGeo is a passport to the most elite study programs in the world.
The long-term logic is straightforward: better substantive preparation leads to a better university, a better university means a stronger network, and that translates into real career opportunities – in academia, public administration, the environmental sector, urban planning, international organizations, or global business. Investment in geography olympiad training pays dividends throughout adult life.
Working methodology – why do parents and students choose MonPat Education?
The geography olympiad has a three-stage structure: the school stage involves independent research work on a chosen topic relating to a specific geographical object or process; the regional and central stages are demanding written tests and oral sections testing theoretical knowledge and analytical skills. Each of these stages requires a different preparation strategy.
In our work we prioritize an individual approach tailored to the student’s level and pace. After the first consultation we propose a concrete action plan with clear goals for each stage of the competition. We work on archived olympiad problems, draw on academic literature that goes beyond the core curriculum, analyze every mistake made, and run simulations of successive stages – including oral discussion in the style of an examination panel.
After every session the student receives brief feedback, and the parent has a clear picture of what has already been mastered and what we are working on in the following week. We maintain ongoing contact between sessions – if the student encounters a problem while writing the research paper or analyzing a map with an unusual projection, they do not have to wait until the next meeting. Our tutors know the system from the inside because they have themselves participated in subject olympiads and admissions processes at the most selective universities in the world.
The work proceeds in an atmosphere of clarity, clear expectations, and predictability. It is a demanding but supportive environment – one in which the student develops not only their result but above all genuine academic competencies: the ability to conduct independent research, critically analyze sources, formulate arguments, and defend their own position.
Scope of support in geography olympiad preparation
Our geography olympiad program covers the full preparation path – from potential assessment to final simulations before the central stage:
- Material scope analysis – mapping the requirements for each stage of the competition and organizing them into a coherent work schedule.
- Work on archived olympiad problems – analysis of questions from previous editions, discussion of marking schemes and the panel’s way of thinking.
- Extended theory – academic literature from physical geography, human and economic geography, cartography, GIS, and iGeo topics.
- Project consultations for the research paper – support in choosing the topic, formulating the hypothesis, selecting methods, and presenting results at the school stage.
- Preparation for the oral stage – simulations of the panel discussion, argumentation training, and working under time pressure.
- Error analysis and solution strategies – every practice test ends with detailed feedback.
- Development of academic competencies – working with maps, statistical data, terrain profiles, and source texts in both Polish and English.
The geography olympiad and comprehensive preparation for studying abroad
For many of our students the olympiad is not a goal in itself, but an element of a broader strategy. Support in geography olympiad preparation complements our flagship offering of preparation for studies at the most selective universities in the world. The title of finalist or laureate is a strong profile element in applications to studies in the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, or the US.
If a student is planning to apply for geography, geology, earth sciences, spatial economics, or environmental protection at universities such as Oxford or Cambridge, it is worth thinking about the full path: Ivy League Plus application or grade analysis and UK university selection, subject tutoring (geography, IB geography, A-Level geography), and preparation for entrance and language exams (IELTS Academic, TOEFL).
For students combining international ambitions with the Polish pathway, we also offer support in other subject olympiads, such as the biology olympiad, the chemistry olympiad, and the olympiad on knowledge of Poland and the contemporary world. As a result the student receives comprehensive support in one place – from school tutoring, through olympiad training, all the way to a full application to their desired university.
