IB psychology tutoring

IB psychology tutoring – understand the human mind, achieve the highest result

Psychology in the IB programme is one of those subjects that seems “manageable” – until the student sees their first markscheme. It suddenly turns out that knowing the theory is only half the battle – the other half is the ability to write answers precisely the way IB examiners want them. On top of this comes the Internal Assessment, time pressure, and competition with TOK, the Extended Essay, and the other five subjects. IB psychology tutoring at MonPat Education addresses exactly this problem: we teach students to think and write to IB criteria, plan their study, and prepare their IA so that the final grade is predictable rather than a matter of chance.

Our mentors are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other leading universities around the world – people who have themselves been through the IB path and know what examiners are really looking for. We work individually, online or in person, at a pace adapted to the student’s speed and school calendar. The first consultation is free – it is a good opportunity to assess where the student currently stands and what can realistically be achieved before the exam session.

Who is IB psychology tutoring for?

Students at IB schools in Poland and abroad who are taking psychology at SL or HL level benefit from our offer – both those who want to improve their grade from 4 to 6, and those aiming for a 7 and an application to programmes such as psychology, cognitive science, or neuroscience at leading universities. We also help students who are starting psychology “from scratch” in the first year of the DP and want to organise their work with the subject sensibly from the beginning, without having to catch up in the final semester.

Our students are often people who:

  • understand the topics but lose points in mock exams because they write “from their own perspective” rather than to the markscheme,
  • are approaching the Internal Assessment submission deadline and need help formulating a hypothesis, choosing a source study, and structuring the report,
  • are combining psychology with other demanding HL subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Maths AA) and need someone to help them regain control of their time,
  • are planning to study psychology, medicine, or social sciences abroad and want IB Psychology to be a strong point of their application rather than a weak link.

We also work with parents – we explain the structure of the IB programme, the assessment system, and what genuinely influences predicted grades and future university admissions.

Why is IB psychology an important choice?

Psychology in the IB is not a standalone degree programme but a subject within the International Baccalaureate, yet its significance extends far beyond the diploma transcript. It is a subject that teaches scientific thinking about human beings – the analysis of research, critical evaluation of methods, and interpretation of data. These skills are invaluable in applications to psychology, medicine, neuroscience, cognitive science, and programmes such as HSPS at Cambridge or PPE at Oxford.

A good result in IB Psychology – especially at HL level – genuinely increases admissions chances. Polish universities typically consider results from three subjects chosen by the candidate when admitting students to psychology, and the IB diploma is converted to points according to each institution’s internal conversion tables. Abroad, psychology often requires specific HL subjects and a high overall score (38–42 points), so every point from psychology counts.

In the long term the relationship is straightforward: better preparation → higher IB grade → stronger application → better university → a stronger network and greater career opportunities. Investing in solid tutoring in year 1 or 2 of the DP pays back over the following decades – in the form of a degree, a job, and a first salary.

How we work – the MonPat Education methodology

Our approach is based on working directly with IB criteria. We do not teach “general psychology” – we teach the psychology that needs to be known and written in the way that earns a 7 in the exam and a high IA grade.

Every session begins with a clearly defined goal: a specific topic, a specific exam question, a specific section of the IA. We work on past papers and analyse markschemes sentence by sentence, so that the student understands why a given answer received 7/9 and another 4/9. We practise answer structure (SAR/ERQ), the use of psychological terminology, the way to cite studies, and the critical evaluation of methodology.

Why do parents and students choose us?

  • After every session we provide brief feedback – what went well, what we are working on next time, and what tasks the student has to complete independently.
  • The parent receives regular progress reports and knows what stage of preparation the child is at – without ambiguity and without having to ask.
  • We are available between sessions – if a student gets stuck on an answer at 10 pm the night before a mock, they have someone to contact.
  • We work on the basis of a roadmap tailored to the student’s school calendar: the IA deadline, mocks, and the exam session are all built into the plan in advance.
  • Our tutors are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other top universities – people who know the system from the inside and are often examiners themselves.

For the parent, this means an end to the chaos and the feeling that “something is happening but nobody knows what”. For the student – stable predicted grades and confidence before the exam.

Scope of support – what IB psychology tutoring covers in detail

We help across the full scope of work with the subject, regardless of what stage the student is at:

  • SL and HL preparation – we cover the biological, cognitive, and sociocultural approaches, options (such as Abnormal Psychology, Health Psychology, Human Relationships, Developmental Psychology), and HL extensions.
  • IA mentoring – from the initial idea and selection of the source study, through methodology and statistical analysis, to the final version of the report in line with the assessment criteria.
  • Work on past papers – Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3 (HL), with markscheme analysis and modelling of 7-point answers.
  • Training in writing to IB criteria – SAR (short-answer responses), ERQ (extended response questions), use of terminology, and critical evaluation of studies.
  • Predicted grade optimisation – concrete steps that translate into a higher predicted grade awarded by the school.
  • Revision strategy plan – organising material before the session, a revision schedule, and a list of priorities.
  • Last-minute support before the exam – intensive sessions in the 4–8 weeks before the diploma exams.

We work both on a long-term basis (from the first year of the DP) and on a targeted basis – if a student only needs support with the IA or only before the mocks.

IB psychology is just the beginning – comprehensive support from MonPat Education

IB psychology tutoring is for many of our students the entry point into a broader academic strategy. The IB Diploma is a natural pathway to studies abroad – in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, or the United States – but international admissions are selective and test thinking, not memory. The diploma alone, even with 40+ points, is often not enough if a strong personal statement, entrance test preparation, and interview practice are missing.

That is why at MonPat Education we treat subject tutoring as part of a larger whole. A student who comes to us for IB psychology support can also receive, as needed:

  • support in other IB subjects – biology, mathematics, English, and others,
  • Extended Essay and TOK support as well as IA mentoring,
  • application guidance – studies in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, the United States, and other countries,
  • language courses – IELTS Academic, TOEFL, C1 Advanced,
  • preparation for entrance exams at leading universities – including UCAT, TSA Oxford, and LNAT.

For students aiming for Cambridge and Oxford we have our flagship Oxbridge Programme – comprehensive support covering mock interviews, personal statement editing (often through multiple rounds), entrance test preparation, and building a top-tier candidate profile. We typically begin 1–3 years before the application, because that is the realistic timeframe needed to build a genuine competitive advantage.

If you are wondering whether IB psychology is the right choice for your child, or you are looking for support tailored to a specific stage of the DP – we invite you to a free consultation. We assess the situation, propose a plan, and you decide whether you want to move forward.
