IMAT exam preparation course

IMAT preparation course – the gateway to medical studies in Italy in English

The dream of studying medicine at an Italian university does not end with strong grades in biology and chemistry. The IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) is the only official admissions examination that determines whether a student can open the door to English-taught Medicine and Surgery programmes at public universities in Italy — in Bologna, Padua, Rome, Pavia, and Milan. It is a test entirely unlike the Polish matura: 60 questions, 100 minutes, negative marking for incorrect answers, and a national ranking in which a fraction of a point can decide a single place at a university.

Our IMAT course at MonPat Education has been created for students who want to approach this examination with a real, proven plan — not simply hoping it will go well. We combine intensive IMAT content preparation with training in strategy, time management, and working under pressure — because these three elements most often determine a candidate’s position in the admissions ranking. The first consultation is free of charge — it helps assess the student’s starting level, plan the preparation pathway, and answer the questions that parents often do not know where to ask.

Who the IMAT preparation course is for

The course is aimed at secondary school students (most commonly in years two and three) and school leavers who are planning to study medicine abroad and are considering Italy as a serious alternative to studying in Poland, the United Kingdom, or Ireland. It is a particularly attractive option for students taking extended biology and chemistry who want to study medicine in English in Europe but are looking for an option with significantly lower tuition fees than in the UK and no requirement to know Italian at the outset.

In our experience, students who prepare most effectively for the IMAT medical test in Italy are those who:

  • are following the Polish extended matura in biology and chemistry or the IB International Baccalaureate programme (HL Biology, HL Chemistry),
  • want to prepare simultaneously for several application pathways — Italy, the UK, and Poland — and need a coherent one-to-two-year plan,
  • treat medicine in Italy as a first choice rather than a “plan B”,
  • want to study systematically with a mentor who knows the realities of the examination from the inside and understands what the IMAT ranking looks like after results are announced.

Parents most commonly come to us when they can see that their child has academic potential but lacks experience with Anglo-Saxon style tests, time pressure, and negative marking. These are precisely the competences we develop during the course.

Why the IMAT is an examination you cannot simply wait out

The IMAT is distinctive for several reasons. First — it takes place only once a year, usually in September. Second — it covers five areas: biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, logical reasoning, and general knowledge and reading comprehension — all in English, in 100 minutes. Third, and most importantly — it uses negative marking: a correct answer earns 1.5 points, an incorrect one loses 0.4, and a skipped question loses nothing. This means the IMAT rewards not only knowledge but also the mature judgement to know when it is better to leave a question blank.

For candidates this is a significant difference from the Polish matura. Here it is not enough to “know a lot” — you need to solve tasks quickly, eliminate incorrect answers, and ensure that in the biology section (which carries the highest weighting and determines ranking position in the event of a tie) your precision is at its maximum.

Why does this matter in the long term? Because the IMAT opens doors not only to a degree, but to an entire medical career in Europe. Medical degrees in Italy are recognised across the European Union, meaning a graduate can return to Poland, work in Germany, the Netherlands, or Scandinavia without going through a complex degree recognition process. Better IMAT preparation leads to a higher score. A higher score means the choice of a specific, stronger university. And the choice of university — together with its professional network, the quality of the university hospital, and access to specialisations — genuinely shapes a medical career for the next 30 to 40 years.

How our sessions work

We work individually — one mentor, one student. Every course begins with a diagnostic test that shows which areas the student has solid foundations in and where material needs to be covered. On this basis we design a personalised learning roadmap — with specific weekly goals, task lists, and dates for practice tests.

Sessions involve work with authentic examination tasks from previous years, analysis of recurring question patterns, practice on the logical reasoning and general knowledge sections (which most often catch Polish students off guard), and regular simulations of the full examination under conditions as close as possible to the real thing. After every session the student receives brief written feedback — with a list of things to refine and guidance on what to focus on before the next meeting. Parents receive progress reports on a regular cycle, so they know exactly what stage of preparation their child has reached.

Why do parents and students choose our IMAT online course? Because we work with mentors who have themselves been through selective admissions examinations at Western universities and know the mechanics of this type of test inside out. Because availability is genuine — we respond to messages between sessions when a difficult task or doubt arises. Because we do not leave the student with a ready-made answer key, but teach them how to think about IMAT tasks calmly, without panic in the final 20 minutes of the examination.

What the IMAT course covers

  • Biology — the full IMAT syllabus with an emphasis on the highest-weighted sections (cell biology, genetics, physiology, ecology),
  • Chemistry — general, inorganic, and organic chemistry approached from an examination perspective, with the IMAT question typology,
  • Physics and mathematics — a concise course on the topics that appear most frequently in past papers,
  • Logical reasoning — methods for analysing logic tasks, eliminating incorrect answers, and working under time pressure,
  • General knowledge and reading — a section that surprises many students but is manageable with the right training,
  • Examination strategy — when to answer, when to make an informed guess, when to skip, and how to allocate 100 minutes across 60 questions,
  • IMAT practice tests under examination conditions with error analysis and a progress curve,
  • Teaching materials — organised study notes, task lists, and a question bank based on previous sittings,
  • Mentoring — ongoing contact with the tutor between sessions and regular progress checks,
  • Registration support — help navigating the Universitaly platform and the university ranking.

IMAT is one piece of a larger puzzle

Medical studies in Italy are today one of the most underrated pathways for Polish students — but they rarely stand apart from other educational decisions. For this reason, our IMAT preparation course forms part of the wider offer at MonPat Education, which covers the entire process of preparing a student for study abroad: from choosing a secondary school profile, through preparation for the IB International Baccalaureate or A-levels, to final application support.

Many of our students combine the IMAT with a potential assessment for medicine in Italy and the IELTS Academic course, which documents the level of English required by many universities. Some students apply simultaneously for the UCAT in the UK or for medicine in Ireland (HPAT), treating the IMAT as one of three pathways to a medical degree in Europe.

If a student is not yet certain whether medicine in Italy is the right direction, it is worth starting with a conversation with one of our advisers — we will help assess the realistic chances, match the application strategy, and draw up a plan for the next one to two years. The first consultation is free of charge and without obligation.

The IMAT is an examination that rewards composure, strategy, and consistency. With the right preparation it becomes not a barrier, but a genuine opportunity to study medicine in English in Europe.
