A-Level English tutoring

A-Levels English tutoring — preparation for the British English school-leaving exam

English at A-Level is much more than knowledge of grammar and rich vocabulary. It is the ability to analyse text, write academic essays at C1–C2 level, and work in accordance with the criteria of British exam boards such as AQA, OCR, or Pearson. Many students fall into the same trap — they think that since they speak English fluently, the exam will not cause them any problems. Meanwhile, A-Levels reward precision, the structure of argumentation, and knowledge of specific exam conventions.

At MonPat Education, we run A-Levels English tutoring that really prepares students for the exam — regardless of whether the student chooses the English Language or English Literature path, or combines both. We work with authentic past papers, official markschemes, and individual correction of written work. Our staff consists of graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other top British universities — people who have themselves been through this exam and know what examiners really pay attention to. The first consultation is free — it’s a good moment to assess the student’s level and plan a preparation strategy.

Who is A-Levels English tutoring for?

In our experience, A-Levels English tutoring is most often chosen by three groups of students. The first is young people studying in the British system — at international schools in Poland or abroad, where A-Levels are a natural educational path. The second group is students planning to study in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, or other EU countries, who want to strengthen their application profile with a solid British school-leaving exam result. The third is ambitious students at Polish high schools who want to genuinely push their English to academic C1–C2 level and open the doors to English-speaking universities.

Parents come to us usually when predicted grades are lower than the student’s potential, when writing essays is a bottleneck, or when stable, systematic preparation for a specific exam board is needed. We help both students fighting for a passing grade and those aiming for an A* and an application to top British universities.

Why are A-Levels in English key for applications to foreign studies?

A-Level English is one of the strongest assets in applications to English-speaking universities. A score in English Language or English Literature at A/A* level is a clear signal to recruiters that the candidate will cope with academic writing, critical reading, and work with source literature — i.e. with what humanities, law, economics, or social science studies in the UK really require.

Importantly, A-Levels are also recognised by Polish universities and universities across Europe, which gives the student great flexibility when making the final decision about the course and place of study. For people applying for courses such as law, journalism, English Studies, History, PPE, or modern languages, a good A-Level English result is sometimes even a basic admissions requirement.

It is an investment that pays off in the long term. Better exam results open the way to a stronger university, a stronger university means a better network of contacts, more interesting internship programmes, and a higher starting point in a professional career. In the case of A-Level English, there is one more element — language fluency at C1–C2 level, which stays with the student for life and becomes the foundation of every further academic and professional path.

What do our A-Levels English tutoring lessons look like?

Our methodology is based on working with real exam materials and precise grading criteria. We start every course with a diagnosis — we check how the student writes, reads, and analyses text, and then we lay out an individual preparation map for the specific exam board (AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel, Cambridge International). After each session, we provide brief feedback — the student knows what went well, what needs work, and what the tasks are for the next meeting. The parent sees on an ongoing basis what stage the child is at and how the preparations are going.

During the lessons, we focus on what really earns marks on the exam:

  • analysis of literary and non-literary texts — from the classics to media and contemporary texts, with an emphasis on understanding conventions, context, and the author’s intentions,
  • writing academic essays of 2000–3000+ words in line with the requirements of British exam boards — structure, thesis, argumentation, use of quotations, conclusions,
  • systematic work with past papers and mock exams in conditions close to exam conditions,
  • perfecting grammar, vocabulary, and stylistics at C1–C2 level — with an emphasis on the academic register,
  • in the English Literature path — comparative analysis of novels, poetry, and dramas, work with the canon and historical-cultural contexts,
  • in the English Language path — analysis of language, stylistics, research on child language development, media texts,
  • revision strategy and time management during the exam — an often underestimated element that decides the final result.

Why do parents and students choose us? Because we combine substantive knowledge with real exam experience. Our tutors have themselves sat A-Levels, studied at British universities, and have repeatedly helped students through this path. We are also available between lessons — a short message with a question about a task, a request to check an essay draft, or a consultation before a test is standard for us, not an exception. The student feels that they are not left alone with the material, and the parent — that their child is genuinely looked after.

A-Levels as an element of comprehensive preparation for studies abroad

A-Level English tutoring is often the first step in a much wider educational strategy. The international school-leaving exam — whether we are talking about A-Levels or IB — opens the doors to universities that would be more difficult to access after the Polish Matura alone. At MonPat Education we treat this exam as the foundation on which the whole application path is built.

If the student is thinking about studying in the UK, it is worth looking at this comprehensively now. Support covers not only subject preparation, but also grade analysis and university selection in the UK, comprehensive advice on applying for studies in the United Kingdom, and in the case of the most selective courses — the flagship Oxbridge Programme, i.e. full support in applying to Oxford and Cambridge, with mock interviews, personal statement correction, and preparation for entrance tests such as TSA Oxford, LNAT, or MAT.

For students considering other geographical directions, we have offers for preparation for studies in the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, the USA, and Italy. We also strengthen the candidate’s profile through preparation for language certificates — IELTS Academic, TOEFL, or Cambridge C1 Advanced — and other A-Levels subjects, including mathematics, English literature, history, or economics. You can find more about the exam itself in the section about A-Levels.

If you want to talk about how A-Levels English tutoring can fit into your child’s application plan — we invite you to a free first consultation. We will discuss the student’s level, expectations, the chosen exam board, and put together a realistic preparation plan.
