IB Economics Tutoring

IB economics tutoring – comprehensive preparation for the international baccalaureate

IB Economics is one of those subjects in which the difference between “I understand the topic” and “I write to the markscheme” can determine the final grade. Students often know the theory but lose points on imprecise definitions, poorly drawn diagrams, or poorly chosen articles for the IA. Parents, meanwhile, do not always understand how the IB assessment system works, how much weight the Internal Assessment carries, and why HL Economics requires a completely different approach from SL.

Our IB economics tutoring addresses exactly these problems. We work with the student on content, the technique of writing to the criteria, and exam strategy – so that predicted grades are stable and the final IB economics exam result reflects genuine potential. The first consultation is free, and sessions are led by graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other leading universities who have sat the international baccalaureate themselves and know the system from the inside.

Who is IB economics tutoring for?

Students at various stages of working with the subject benefit from our support – from those who are just starting the Diploma Programme and need to organise the foundations of micro- and macroeconomics, to exam students finalising their IA and working through past papers before the exam. IB economics tutoring is particularly well suited when:

  • the student has chosen economics at HL level and wants to handle the additional Paper 3 with confidence, which requires advanced quantitative analysis,
  • at SL level there are difficulties with Paper 1, Paper 2, or the structure of the Internal Assessment,
  • the predicted grade does not match the ambitions of a candidate applying to universities abroad,
  • the student is planning to apply to economics, business, or PPE programmes in the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, or Italy, where the IB economics result has a genuine impact on admissions,
  • the parent wants predictability of results and control over how the child’s preparation is progressing.

We work with students at IB schools in Poland as well as those studying abroad or online. More information about the diploma programme itself can be found on the IB DP international baccalaureate page.

Why does IB economics matter for the student’s future?

IB Economics is a subject from the “individuals and societies” group that combines microeconomics, macroeconomics, and global economics. It teaches thinking in terms of scarcity, choice, efficiency, equity, sustainability, and interdependence – which is precisely what admissions panels at the best universities expect from candidates applying to economics, finance, business, international economic relations, or PPE.

For those aiming for programmes such as Economics at LSE, Cambridge, Oxford, Warwick, or Bocconi, a good result in IB economics is often a mandatory condition rather than a welcome bonus. Universities look at the predicted grade in HL Economics as a signal of whether the candidate will be able to keep up with the academic pace of studies. A weaker result can close doors even for a very talented student with a strong extracurricular profile.

It is also worth keeping the long-term perspective in mind: better IB results → a better university → a stronger network → greater career opportunities. Economics from a prestigious programme opens pathways to careers in consulting, investment banking, international institutions, and think tanks. That is why the right number of tutoring hours at the right moment can change an educational trajectory for many years to come.

Our methodology – why parents and students choose us

At MonPat Education every IB economics session begins with a diagnostic assessment: we check where the gaps in subject knowledge are, and where the problem lies in the technique of writing to IB criteria. We do not work towards being “broadly correct” – we teach writing for marks, meaning answering precisely in the way that IB awards points. We analyse the markscheme, model answers, and practise on past papers, because these are the closest approximation to the real exam.

The student receives a clear action plan – a roadmap tailored to whether they have two years, one year, or the final months before the May session. After every session we provide brief feedback, so the parent knows what stage the child is at and what was specifically worked through. Between sessions we remain in contact – if a student gets stuck on an IA commentary or does not know how to draw a diagram for an unusual question, they do not have to wait a week for an answer.

The most important elements of our IB Economics work are:

  • markscheme analysis and training in writing answers to IB criteria – every essay and extended response is assessed exactly as an IB examiner would assess it,
  • work with past papers from Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3 (HL), including practising writing speed and time management,
  • training in economic diagrams – from supply and demand to AD-AS models, monopoly, externalities, and foreign exchange markets,
  • analysis of newspaper articles for the IA: selecting an article, matching theory, choosing one of the key IB concepts, and structuring the commentary,
  • support in writing all three IA commentaries within the 800-word limit each – with emphasis on evaluation and writing “to the criteria”,
  • predicted grade optimisation and a revision strategy for the final weeks before the exam.

Scope of support – what IB economics tutoring covers in detail

We tailor our offer to the level (SL/HL) and to the point at which the student begins working with us. The scope covers the full range of IB Economics material and the most demanding elements of assessment:

  • preparation for SL and HL with emphasis on the differences in weighting between components (Paper 1, Paper 2, IA at SL; additionally Paper 3 at HL),
  • full coverage of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international economics – including government intervention, market failure, inflation, unemployment, trade, exchange rates, growth, and development,
  • comprehensive IA mentoring – from article selection, through matching theory and diagrams, to writing an evaluation in line with the criteria,
  • regular work on exam papers from previous sessions,
  • a revision strategy plan and support in the final week before the exam,
  • support for students resitting the IB exam – see the IB resit page.

The hourly tutoring rate is 150 PLN, and the first consultation is free – it allows us to diagnose the student’s needs and propose a realistic work plan.

IB economics is just the beginning – what comes next?

The international baccalaureate is a natural pathway leading to studies abroad, which is why good preparation in IB economics makes sense not only from the perspective of the exam itself. It is the first step towards applications to universities in the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, or the United States – and there, much more than just an exam result matters.

International admissions are selective: they test thinking, not memory, and reward deep understanding and the ability to argue. The personal statement, entrance tests, and interviews are elements that cannot be “caught up on in a week”. That is why many of our students begin with tutoring in a specific subject and over time also make use of our flagship Oxbridge programme and support with applications to other leading universities. If you are considering this pathway, explore our offer for:

  • studies in the United Kingdom – including preparation for Oxbridge, LSE, and Imperial College,
  • studies in the Netherlands and studies in Denmark – economics and business programmes taught in English,
  • studies in Italy, including Bocconi University – potential assessment,
  • IB Internal Assessment support and Extended Essay and TOK support.

This means the student is never left alone with the question “what comes after IB?”, and the parent has the confidence that the university preparation process is coherent and well considered. IB economics tutoring is a concrete tool for achieving a target result, but at the same time an element of a broader educational strategy – one in which every exam, every IA, and every subject choice brings the student closer to their dream university.
