English language competition organised by the Board of Education

Regional English language competition – preparation that opens the doors to the best secondary schools

Many parents of students in years 4–8 ask themselves: how to effectively prepare a child for the regional English language competition, when the requirements go significantly beyond the school curriculum? This is a genuine challenge – a child may perform excellently in lessons, receive top grades, and still not be ready for B2/C1 level tasks, text analysis, listening comprehension, or cultural topics that appear at the regional stage. The English competition is not a school test – it is a miniature academic examination.

At MonPat Education we prepare students for the regional English language competition in an organised way, based on archive problems from previous editions and on a real understanding of what the panels expect. The title of laureate gives priority in secondary school admission, exemption from the eighth-grade English exam, and an outstanding grade on the school report, while the title of finalist also brings significant points in the admissions process. This is not an “addition to a CV” – it is often the deciding factor in gaining a place at the best secondary school in the city.

Who is the English competition preparation for?

Our programme is aimed at primary school students – mainly in years 6, 7, and 8 – who want more than the standard school curriculum and have the ambition to compete for the title of laureate or finalist. These are capable students, often with very good grades, but without prior training in problem-solving thinking and working with unusual tasks. A language olympiad and a regional competition require a completely different approach from a class test – the student must learn to work with demanding texts, understand cultural context, and argue in a foreign language.

Support is also effective for students who have already taken part in the competition and did not advance to the next stage – they know that self-directed preparation is not enough and want to work with someone who knows the system from the inside. We also welcome parents who have noticed that their child has a language talent and want to channel that potential towards real success rather than leave it to chance.

Why the English competition matters so much

The regional English language competition is one of the most important distinguishing factors in secondary school applications. A laureate at the regional stage gains priority admission to their chosen secondary school and exemption from the English section of the eighth-grade exam, which genuinely reduces the pressure on the student in their final year of primary school. A finalist also receives significant admissions points, which can determine a place in a bilingual class or a programme with extended English.

But there is more. The English language competition builds a foundation that pays dividends throughout the entire period of education. A student who has trained to C1 level at the age of 13–14 starts secondary school with an enormous advantage – both in preparing for the school-leaving exam and in the direction of applications to universities in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, or Ireland. An English language olympiad is a long-term investment – better results lead to a better secondary school, a better secondary school leads to a stronger candidate profile, and that leads to universities and careers that others can only dream of.

Our methodology – why parents and students choose MonPat Education

We work in an academic manner, but adapted to the student’s age. Every programme begins with an assessment of the candidate’s level and a review of the requirements for the current edition of the competition – the topics change every year and are announced by regional authorities in the summer, so every plan is built on fresh data. The student then receives a concrete work map: how many sessions, which areas, what the checkpoints are.

After every session the parent and student receive brief feedback – what went well, what we are continuing to work on, and what needs to be covered at home. Between sessions we are available for questions and doubts, because we know well that competition preparation is not just hours in the calendar, but also the feeling that someone is managing the process. We work on archive problems from regional competitions, analyse the student’s mistakes in a way that teaches thinking rather than simply correcting answers. We also simulate the oral stage and timed conditions, so that there are no surprises on the day of the competition.

Our tutors are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other leading universities – people who have themselves sat examinations at the highest level and know how to build academic thinking in a younger student. For the parent, this means a predictable process, clear progress reporting, and peace of mind – the most frequently mentioned word by our clients when we ask what their choice of MonPat has given them.

Scope of support in regional English competition preparation

Our English language competition preparation programme covers all the elements needed for the student to enter the regional stage prepared in terms of both knowledge and mindset:

  • Analysis of the subject scope for the current edition of the competition – regional authority requirements, thematic topics, vocabulary range.
  • Work on archive problems from the school, district, and regional stages – the student becomes familiar with the types of tasks before encountering them in the exam.
  • Listening comprehension and text analysis training at B2/C1 level – a key element of the second and third stages.
  • Thematic and cultural vocabulary – topics relating to English-speaking countries, literature, and social realities.
  • Grammar and language accuracy work – with emphasis on tasks that go beyond the standard curriculum.
  • Preparation for the oral stage – argumentation, free expression, and responding to panel questions.
  • Project consultations and contact outside sessions – because learning does not stop when the clock runs out.
  • Timed simulations of competition conditions – the student enters the exam without the stress of the unknown.

The regional competition as the first step in a long educational journey

It is worth remembering that preparation for the regional English language competition is, for many students, their first serious experience of academic work. By choosing support at MonPat Education, you gain not only training for one specific exam, but also access to a comprehensive educational pathway. After success in the competition, the next stages open naturally – secondary school profile matching, preparation for the Polish or international school-leaving exam, and in the longer term, applications to universities abroad.

For students who are already thinking about an international path, the language competition is an excellent prelude to programmes such as the IB diploma or A-Levels. Parents thinking about the very top tier of universities – Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, LSE – often begin precisely with olympiads and competitions at primary school level, because these build the first elements of a top-tier candidate profile. At MonPat Education we guide students through this entire process – from the first English competition, through the school-leaving exam, all the way to the final application to their dream university.

The first consultation is free

If you are wondering whether your child has a chance of earning the title of laureate or finalist in the English language competition – or whether this is the right direction to take this year at all – we invite you to a free consultation. During the meeting we will assess the student’s level, discuss the current competition requirements, propose a preparation plan, and show what working on real tasks looks like. No commitment, no pressure – it is simply a conversation that will help you make a good decision.

The language competition is an investment that pays back in the nearest secondary school admissions round, but continues to deliver returns throughout years of further education. The earlier a student enters the mode of academic thinking, the easier they will find secondary school, the school-leaving exam, and applications to universities abroad.
