IB Polish language tutoring
IB Polish tutoring – master literary analysis and achieve your target grade in the International Baccalaureate
In the International Baccalaureate programme, Polish is one of those subjects where “I understand the topic” means something entirely different from “I write to the mark scheme”. Students often have an excellent feel for literature, form their own interpretations, and read with genuine enthusiasm — yet their essays still do not receive the grades they expect. The reason? IB assesses in a way that is not taught in Polish schools: according to strict criteria, with an emphasis on a precise thesis, organised argumentation, and analysis of authorial choices rather than plot summary.
IB Polish tutoring at MonPat Education is not another series of literature lessons — it is targeted training focused on the specific assessment components: Paper 1, Paper 2, and the Individual Oral. We work with students at both SL and HL, on Polish A: Literature and Polish A: Language and Literature courses. Our goal is a predictable, consistent result — one that can support an application to competitive universities in Poland and abroad.
The first consultation is free of charge. It allows us to diagnose where the student actually stands in relation to the IB criteria and which study plan will produce the greatest qualitative improvement in the shortest time.

Who IB Polish tutoring is for
Our sessions are attended primarily by students at IB Diploma schools in Poland and abroad who want to maximise their marks in Polish. The IB Polish examination is technically demanding in terms of writing — which is why our offer is particularly well suited to students who:
- are in a pre-IB class or in the first year of the IB Diploma Programme and want to understand the logic of the assessment criteria from the outset (you can read more about this stage in the pre-IB online tutoring section),
- find it difficult to move from “talking about a text” to mark-scheme-oriented analysis,
- are preparing for the Individual Oral and need support in selecting a global issue and two representative texts,
- are writing the HL Essay and are unsure how to narrow their line of inquiry to 1,200–1,500 words,
- want to improve their predicted grade before applying to universities that require a grade 6 or 7 in a Language A subject,
- are planning to study in Poland, where a Polish A result is sometimes treated as the equivalent of the extended-level matura,
- are resitting a session and need the support described in our IB resit offer.
We also assist parents who are unfamiliar with the IB structure and cannot assess whether their child is on the right trajectory. During the first consultation we explain how grading works, what weight each component carries, and what genuinely determines the final grade.
Why Polish in the IB matters
For the majority of Polish IB students, Polish A is their mother tongue at literary level — and therefore, paradoxically, one of the greatest potential sources of marks in the entire diploma. A strong result in this subject can offset weaker performance in science subjects and significantly raise the total IB score that determines applications to universities abroad.
The IB Polish examination tests not memory but academic thinking skills: constructing a thesis, building an argument, comparing texts, and demonstrating awareness of cultural context. These are precisely the competences assessed by admissions teams at Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, and universities in the Netherlands and Italy. Admissions tests such as the LNAT, TSA, and Oxbridge interviews ultimately test the same ability — close reading, formulating an argument, and defending a position.
Investment in thorough preparation in Polish therefore has a long-term effect: a stronger IB result → a wider range of universities to which an application is realistic → a stronger academic network → better career opportunities. Polish A is not an “add-on” to the subjects at the centre of a student’s application — it is a foundation that demonstrates to a university that the candidate can engage with texts at degree level.
How we run IB Polish tutoring — our approach
We work individually, tailoring the programme to each school’s reading list, the student’s profile, and their target grade. We do not use ready-made scripts — every plan begins with a diagnostic: we analyse a sample of the student’s work against the four IB criteria and identify where marks are being lost.
After every session the student receives brief written feedback: what went well, what needs improvement, and what to prepare specifically for the next lesson. Parents receive regular updates on progress and the current stage of preparation — there is never a situation in which they do not know what is happening between sessions. Our tutors are also available between sessions for quick questions: a brief doubt that arises while writing an essay does not have to wait until the next lesson.
In practice, our tutoring is built around work with past papers and authentic examination examples. We train students in mark-scheme analysis — the student begins to assess their own work according to the IB criteria, which dramatically shortens the distance to a grade 6 or 7. We simulate examinations under timed conditions: SL Paper 1 is 1h 15m, HL Paper 1 is 2h 15m, and Paper 2 is 1h 45m at both SL and HL. We also teach students how to plan an essay in the first ten minutes, so that the remaining time is spent writing rather than searching for ideas.
Why parents and students choose MonPat Education: our tutors are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other leading universities, who know the IB not from theory but from their own academic experience. Many of them also serve as examiners or IA mentors, which means we know exactly what assessors look for — from the construction of a thesis in Paper 2 to the selection of texts for the Individual Oral.
Scope of support — what IB Polish tutoring covers
- Paper 1 preparation — analysis of unseen non-literary extracts (articles, speeches, advertisements, comics, essays), with emphasis on the guiding question and reading to the criteria,
- Paper 2 preparation — comparative essay on two chosen literary works, with work on thematic structure and the logic of the argument,
- Individual Oral (IO) — selection of a global issue, choice of two texts (one literary, one non-literary), work on the 10-minute presentation and the Q&A section,
- HL Essay — mentoring on the 1,200–1,500-word research essay: from the line of inquiry, through the plan, to successive drafts,
- work with the specific reading list of the student’s school — Polish literature in the original and in translation,
- training in writing to the four IB criteria: Knowledge & Understanding, Analysis & Evaluation, Focus & Organization, Language,
- regular past papers under examination conditions with full feedback,
- revision strategy ahead of the May or November session and optimisation of the predicted grade,
- emotional and organisational support during periods when IA deadlines across multiple subjects coincide.
IB Polish tutoring as part of a broader educational strategy
Polish is rarely the only challenge facing an IB student. More often, a student who is working on their Polish result is simultaneously planning an international application, writing their Extended Essay, fighting for a predicted grade in mathematics or chemistry, and preparing for language examinations. For this reason, our tutoring forms a natural part of MonPat Education’s comprehensive support — not a standalone course, but a component of a carefully considered pathway.
If you are planning to study abroad, it is worth seeing how our subject-specific IB tutoring connects with the application process: from support with the Extended Essay and TOK, through Internal Assessment support, to advice for students applying to universities in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, or Italy. Our flagship programmes are the Ivy League+ application programme and Oxbridge preparation — where a strong International Baccalaureate result with a high Polish A grade is often a prerequisite for humanities and social science courses.
To put it plainly: a strong IB Polish result is not the end of the road — it is the foundation on which everything else is built. A student who masters the IB essay structure with us is simultaneously much better prepared to write a personal statement, to perform in an Oxbridge interview, and to sit the admissions tests that assess academic thinking.
