Mathematics Olympiad

Mathematics Olympiad – comprehensive preparation for the most prestigious competition in Poland

Many talented students do well at mathematics in school, but when they face olympiad tasks, they feel helpless. This is not a reflection of their ability – it is the difference in level between the school curriculum and the academic standard demanded by the Mathematics Olympiad. Olympiad tasks do not test knowledge of formulas, but the ability to think through problems, creativity, and a deep understanding of mathematical structures.

At MonPat Education we provide Mathematics Olympiad preparation in a way that genuinely increases the chances of advancing to subsequent stages. We work with students on archived tasks, extended theory, and solving strategies that allow them to develop thinking close to that of the first year of a mathematics degree. Our mentors are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and leading Polish universities – they have themselves competed in olympiads and know what the process looks like from the inside.

The benefits a student gains are long-term: exemption from the mathematics matura exam, direct university entry without entrance exams, a major distinguishing factor in applications to universities abroad, and real academic competencies that school does not build.

Who is Mathematics Olympiad preparation for?

The Mathematics Olympiad is the oldest and most prestigious subject olympiad in Poland, organised continuously since the 1949/1950 school year. It is aimed primarily at secondary school students, although particularly gifted primary school students may also take part. It consists of three stages and covers tasks in algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics.

Our support is directed at students who want more than the school curriculum offers – those who enjoy thinking but have never been trained to work with non-standard tasks. This is an offer for:

  • secondary school students who want to take part in the Mathematics Olympiad and advance beyond the school stage,
  • primary school students preparing for the Junior Mathematics Olympiad,
  • ambitious students who want to build a strong candidate profile for studies abroad,
  • IB and A-Level students for whom a mathematics competition becomes a key distinguishing factor in their application,
  • students planning to study in STEM fields – mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering, or economics.

Why the Mathematics Olympiad matters so much

The Mathematics Olympiad is not “just another competition”. It is the strongest academic currency a Polish student can earn at secondary school. The title of laureate or finalist opens doors that even very high matura results cannot.

What a student specifically gains:

  • exemption from the mathematics matura exam with a result of 100% – a safety net in the admissions process at Polish universities,
  • direct university entry without entrance exams at most Polish technical and general universities,
  • a major distinction in applications to universities in the United Kingdom, the USA, or the Netherlands,
  • a real advantage in Oxbridge applications, where assessors look for evidence of problem-based thinking, not just grades,
  • the building of confidence and academic competencies that pay dividends throughout the whole of one’s studies.

Here an important truth emerges that is rarely spoken about at school: in international admissions, what counts is not the depth of knowledge of formulas, but depth of understanding and the ability to think through problems. Oxbridge and leading universities do not ask whether a student can solve a quadratic equation – they ask how a student approaches a problem they have never seen before. The Mathematics Olympiad trains exactly that skill. Better preparation leads to a stronger candidate profile, a stronger profile leads to a better university, and a better university leads to a stronger network of contacts and greater professional opportunities.

Our methodology – why parents and students choose us

Knowledge alone is not enough to become a laureate. You need a guide who knows both the subject matter and the specifics of olympiad thinking. Mathematics olympiad training at MonPat Education is based on an individual approach and work with a mentor who has themselves followed this path.

We work according to a clear plan – each student receives a roadmap covering the individual topics: algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. After each session we provide brief, specific feedback, so that students know what they have already mastered and what still needs work. We do not leave anyone with unanswered questions between sessions – we respond promptly, because we know that a good idea for a solution often arises at unexpected moments.

Parents regularly receive progress reports and have a clear picture of the stage their child has reached in their preparation. Students, in turn, appreciate being able to ask questions, try things out, make mistakes, and return to a task – in an atmosphere where a mistake is part of the process, not a cause for stress.

During our work together:

  • we analyse tasks from previous editions – students see what the olympiad level genuinely looks like,
  • we introduce theory that goes beyond the standard curriculum – elements of number theory, combinatorics, inequalities, and olympiad geometry,
  • we teach problem-solving strategies – how to break down a task when the solution is not immediately apparent,
  • we analyse mistakes and dead ends, because learning from errors is the fastest route to progress,
  • we prepare students for the oral stage, where argumentation and clarity of reasoning are paramount.

Scope of support

Our Mathematics Olympiad preparation programme covers everything a student needs to progress consciously through the successive stages of the competition:

  • analysis of the syllabus and the student’s starting level,
  • work on archived olympiad tasks from previous editions,
  • extended theory – algebra, geometry, number theory, combinatorics,
  • training in mathematical reasoning and writing complete proofs,
  • error analysis and strategies for solving non-standard tasks,
  • preparation for the oral stage and development of argumentation skills,
  • project consultations and individual subject support between sessions.

The Mathematics Olympiad as part of a broader academic strategy

Olympiad preparation is a great start, but at MonPat Education we take a wider view – together with the student we build a strategy that leads all the way to their dream university. The title of Mathematics Olympiad laureate fits perfectly into the profile of a top-tier candidate sought by the best universities in Poland and abroad.

If a student’s goal is admission to Oxford or Cambridge, a natural complement to olympiad preparation is our courses for the MAT and TMUA examinations – compulsory admissions tests for mathematics and related subjects. For students considering studying economics in the UK, a course preparing for the TSA Oxford exam will also prove useful.

For IB students we offer IB mathematics tutoring, and for those working within the British system – A-Level mathematics tutoring. For students planning to apply abroad, support in the application process itself is also crucial – we assist with areas such as grade analysis and university selection in the UK, and choosing the right course of study.

The Mathematics Olympiad is not an end in itself – it is a tool that opens the way to a stronger application, a better university, and a better career. The first consultation at MonPat Education is free of charge – we will analyse the student’s level, discuss realistic goals, and show how to structure a preparation plan so that the olympiad becomes a springboard to further academic success.
