IB history tutoring

IB history tutoring – comprehensive preparation for the International Baccalaureate

History in the International Baccalaureate programme is one of the most demanding humanities subjects, combining source analysis, academic essay writing, and a deep understanding of historical processes. Many students discover that although they understand the subject matter very well, they struggle with writing answers to the IB mark scheme, structuring their arguments within the assessment criteria, and completing the Internal Assessment. It is precisely these elements — not knowledge alone — that determine the final result.

Our IB history tutoring has been designed to close this gap. We work with students on the specific skills that examiners award marks for: primary source analysis, global comparisons, argumentation in Paper 2 and Paper 3 essays, and research methodology. As a result, the student enters the examination with a predictable, consistent result rather than simply hoping it will go well.

The first consultation is free of charge — it allows us to assess the student’s current level, identify gaps, and propose a study plan tailored to their individual needs and examination date.

Who is IB history tutoring for?

Our offer is aimed primarily at secondary school students following the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme — at both Standard Level and Higher Level. We also support students in the IB MYP and those preparing to begin an IB secondary school for whom history will be one of their chosen subjects.

Tutoring is particularly valuable for students who:

  • are planning applications to universities abroad — in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, or the United States — where IB history is a strong asset in applications to humanities and social science programmes,
  • are considering degrees in law, international relations, political science, or history, where the ability to analyse sources and construct arguments is fundamental,
  • need a high predicted grade to secure a conditional offer from a top university,
  • are preparing their Internal Assessment in history and need a mentor to guide them through the entire research process,
  • find it difficult to adapt their writing style to IB requirements and need systematic essay-writing practice.

We work both with students who are starting from scratch and need solid foundations, and with those aiming for the maximum 7 points and preparing for competitive degree programmes.

Why does IB history matter for a student’s future?

History in the IB programme is far more than a chronology of events. It is a subject that teaches critical thinking, source analysis, and the construction of arguments — competences that are directly tested in interviews at Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, and Bocconi University. Admissions committees at the world’s leading universities particularly value candidates with history HL, because they know such a student has undergone rigorous academic training.

For students applying to universities in the United Kingdom — particularly to programmes such as History, Politics, International Relations, Law, or PPE — HL history with a strong grade is often a prerequisite for receiving an offer. The situation is similar at Dutch, Irish, and American universities, where a grade 6 or 7 in history HL significantly increases the chances of admission and of receiving a scholarship.

It is worth keeping the long-term perspective in mind: stronger IB results mean a better university, and a better university means a stronger academic and professional network, better internship opportunities, and a higher career starting point. IB history is therefore not simply a subject to pass — it is an investment that pays dividends for decades to come.

The IB diploma with a minimum of 24/45 points is recognised at universities around the world, but it is a result above the average (36–38 points in Poland) that opens doors to the most selective programmes. History, as an essay-based subject with a significant Internal Assessment weighting, has a real impact on that score.

Our approach — why parents and students choose us

Our tutors are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other leading universities worldwide who have been through the IB programme themselves and understand how examiners think. Some of them work as official IB examiners, which means we know the system from the inside — we know exactly what assessors look for when marking work and how the process of awarding marks operates.

In practice, our work with a student proceeds as follows:

  • Mark-scheme and past paper analysis — every session is based on real examination questions from previous years and on a detailed analysis of the assessment criteria.
  • Essay-writing practice to the IB criteria — we work on essay structure, the thesis, the use of sources, and counter-argumentation in line with the requirements of Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3.
  • Modelling responses — we show in real time how an examiner thinks and how to build an answer step by step to score the maximum number of marks.
  • Individual Internal Assessment support — from topic selection, through methodology, to the final proofreading of the 2,200-word research essay.
  • Revision strategy planning — every student receives an organised study schedule tailored to their examination date and predicted grades.
  • After every session we provide brief feedback — the student knows what they did well, what needs further work, and what the next steps are. Parents have ongoing visibility of their child’s real progress.
  • We remain in contact between sessions — we answer questions, review essay drafts, and provide support in urgent situations before tests and IA deadlines.

Our track record speaks for itself: all of our students gain places at their chosen universities and successfully pass the IB. MonPat Education alumni are today studying at Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, Imperial College London, and leading Polish universities.

What IB history tutoring covers

Our tutoring covers the full scope of examination preparation and in-programme support:

  • comprehensive preparation at SL and HL — taking into account differences in the number of examination papers and the depth of topics required,
  • work on prescribed subjects (e.g. human rights, civil rights movements), world history topics (world wars, the Cold War, authoritarianism), and depth studies relating to specific regions,
  • primary source analysis training for Paper 1 — a key component of the IB history examination,
  • workshops on writing comparative essays for Paper 2 and in-depth essays for Paper 3 (HL),
  • Internal Assessment mentoring — topic selection, source research, essay structure, and methodological reflection,
  • predicted grade optimisation ahead of applications to universities abroad,
  • intensive support before the examination session — mock exams, timed simulations, and final revision,
  • support with related pieces of work: the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, if the student chooses history as their EE topic.

IB history tutoring as part of a broader educational pathway

IB history tutoring is a natural component of the wider process of preparing for study abroad. The IB diploma alone — even with strong results — is no longer sufficient to gain admission to the most selective programmes. What matters is the whole candidate profile: depth of subject knowledge, the ability to think analytically, preparation for admissions tests (LNAT, TSA, HAT), and performance in interviews.

At MonPat Education we offer students comprehensive application support — from academic mentoring, through personal statement editing and mock Oxbridge-style supervision interviews, to help with choosing a university and degree programme. If IB history is your stepping stone towards law, history, or political science at a UK university, it is worth exploring our application programmes and our university grade analysis and selection service for the UK.

For students who are just beginning their IB journey, we also recommend looking at our preparation programme for the IB secondary school and our materials on how to choose subjects wisely in the IB DP — decisions that have a real impact on later admissions opportunities.
