Choosing the right field of study

Choosing the right field of study – an informed decision that shapes the future

The decision about what to study is one of the first truly strategic choices in a young person’s life. Unfortunately, many students make it under the pressure of time, fashion, or the expectations of those around them – and then change their course after the first year or finish studies that suit neither their interests nor the realities of the job market. At MonPat Education, we know that the choice of field of study should be a conscious process, not a lottery.

Our role is to help you understand who you are as a student and a candidate, what your strengths are, what the job market looks like over the coming years, and which study programmes – in Poland and abroad – really match your aptitudes. Professional educational advice in choosing studies is an investment that saves years and money, and above all gives peace of mind – both to the student and to the parents.

The first consultation is free – it’s a good moment to talk about what really suits your child.

Who is this service for?

Help with choosing studies is used mainly by students in years 1–3 of high school, who want to make the decision consciously, rather than at the last moment before the Matura. The programme also works well for younger students who are facing the choice of a high school profile, and for school leavers who are torn between several paths.

This support is particularly recommended for:

  • students planning to study abroad – in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, Scandinavian countries, Italy, or the USA,
  • IB and Polish Matura students with the ambition to get into top universities,
  • candidates aiming for medicine, science courses, economics, law, or art courses,
  • parents who want their child to have a clear plan instead of random decisions,
  • students who have many interests and cannot decide between them.

Regardless of whether your child is thinking about studying in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the USA, or studies in Poland – our advisors will help to organise thoughts and point out the directions that really suit the candidate’s profile.

Why is the informed choice of field of study so important?

The question “which field of study to choose” comes back to most high school students regularly – and with each semester becomes more pressing. Meanwhile, a good answer will not appear on its own. It requires a reliable analysis of interests, strengths, aptitudes, and the realities of the job market.

A bad decision about the course costs much more than it seems. It is not only a wasted year or two, but also lost opportunities – scholarships, internships, network of contacts at a given university, research projects. In the case of studies abroad, the consequences are even more serious: applications are costly, deadlines are firm, and some universities (e.g. British ones in the UCAS system) allow you to choose only a few courses at the same time.

A well-matched course, on the other hand, is a completely different development path. A better match with the study programme means better results, greater motivation, and a natural advantage in the job market. Students who have consciously chosen their course more often get involved in extracurricular projects, science clubs, and international exchanges – and this in turn opens the doors to the best employers and doctoral programmes.

It is worth remembering one more thing: in the case of many foreign courses, the very choice of programme affects which subjects must be taken in the Matura and which entrance tests must be written. If a student decides on medicine in Italy, the IMAT exam awaits them; if on law in the UK – the LNAT; if on economics at Oxford – the TSA. The sooner the course is clear, the better it is possible to prepare for this process.

How we work – the methodology of informed choice

Our approach to the choice of field of study is based on three pillars: getting to know the student, analysing the realities, and a specific action plan. We do not rely on general online tests or on intuition – we work structurally and measurably.

We start with an in-depth conversation with the student to get to know their interests, way of thinking, previous school and extracurricular successes, and aspirations. We use proven diagnostic tools (including RIASEC and MBTI analysis) that help to objectify the picture of aptitudes. Then we compare this profile with current knowledge of study programmes, admissions requirements, and job market trends over the 2026–2030 perspective.

Every student receives an individual comparative map of several courses – in the form of a table with criteria such as compatibility with interests, job prospects, admissions threshold, costs of studies, and location. Together we assess each course on a point scale and choose those that are really worth considering. After each session we provide brief feedback and specific tasks to be carried out between meetings – thanks to this, the process is not “suspended” between consultations.

Why do parents and students choose us?

  • A clear action plan (roadmap) – you know what is happening at each stage and what the next step is,
  • Individual matching – no ready templates, every diagnosis is created from scratch,
  • Advisors who know the system from the inside – our mentors are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other top universities,
  • Constant contact between sessions – we answer questions quickly, we don’t leave you with doubts,
  • Brief reports after meetings – the parent knows what stage the child is at and what has been worked out,
  • Real data, not guesswork – we work with specific university requirements, market statistics, and proven tools.

Scope of support in choosing the field of study

The educational advice in choosing studies programme is always tailored to the student’s individual situation, but usually includes the following elements:

  • detailed analysis of the student’s profile – interests, strengths, style of work, achievements,
  • diagnostics of aptitudes using psychometric tools,
  • analysis of the job market and forecasts for selected industries for the years 2026–2030,
  • comparison of specific study programmes in Poland and abroad,
  • verification of admissions requirements (Matura subjects, entrance tests, portfolio),
  • building an application strategy – short- and long-term,
  • advice on the choice of subjects for the Polish Matura, IB, or A-Level,
  • a plan for extracurricular development that will strengthen the candidate’s profile,
  • support in the first steps of the application process.

After the end of the consultations, the student knows not only what they want to study, but also why and how to get there.

The choice of course is just the beginning – what next?

A well-conducted process of choosing studies naturally leads to the next stages. Once it is known that your child wants to study, for example, medicine in Ireland, economics in the UK, or psychology in the Netherlands, the real work begins: building the candidate’s profile, preparation for entrance tests and admissions interviews, work on the personal statement.

At MonPat Education we are with the student throughout this whole process. We offer comprehensive support – from subject tutoring, through preparation for the Polish Matura, the IB International Baccalaureate, and A-Levels, to courses for specialist entrance exams and full academic mentoring.

It is worth knowing that the choice of the right school-leaving path already at the stage of choosing a high school has a huge impact on the availability of foreign universities. The IB Matura or A-Level significantly facilitates admissions to universities in the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland, or Scandinavian countries. If it turns out that your child dreams of Oxbridge or another top university, we will add a programme preparing for entrance tests, mock interviews, and work on the personal statement – all run by people who have themselves been through these admissions processes as candidates, and often also as examiners.

Today you will meet our graduates at Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, Imperial College London, as well as at the best Polish universities – UW, UJ, or SGH. Each of these stories started with one thing: a well-posed question about what I really want to study.
