History Olympiad

History olympiad – comprehensive preparation for the most prestigious history competition

Many talented secondary school students are passionate about history, read additional texts, and achieve the highest grades at school, yet when they enter genuine competition in the History Olympiad, they quickly discover that the school curriculum is merely a starting point. This nationwide competition, organized since 1974 by the Polish Historical Society, requires an entirely different way of thinking: working with academic literature, analyzing sources, constructing written problem-based papers, and arguing fluently in an oral discussion. Without targeted training, even an exceptionally gifted student reaches a dead end.

At MonPat Education we will guide your child through all three stages of the olympiad – from the homework assignment in the school elimination round, through the regional essay, to the demanding central stage. Our mentors are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and leading Polish universities, who understand precisely what olympiad panels expect and how to develop a student’s historical reasoning to an academic level. The first consultation is free – find out what professional history olympiad preparation looks like in practice.

Who is this program for?

Our history olympiad training is aimed at post-primary school students who want more than the core curriculum. It is a program for ambitious young people whose school provides a solid foundation but who feel it is not enough – they are missing deeper analysis, discussion of historical contexts, contact with academic literature, and work on developing their own theses.

Those who most commonly come to us are students who:

  • are “good at school” in history but have not been trained in problem-solving – they are only beginning to understand that the olympiad is a different category of demands,
  • are planning humanities, law, or political science studies and want to obtain a guaranteed university place and exemption from the history matura,
  • are applying to foreign universities and need a differentiator in their candidate profile,
  • are participating in the olympiad for the second time and need a strategy to move higher up the results table,
  • want to develop independent historical thinking and work with source texts at first-year university level.

We work with students from across Poland online, which makes it possible to fit the session schedule to the olympiad calendar – from September, through the regional eliminations in January, to the central final in spring.

Why the History Olympiad is an investment that pays off for years

Laureate or finalist status in the History Olympiad gives the student concrete, measurable benefits that genuinely change the trajectory of their education. This means a maximum history matura result (100%) without having to sit the exam, a guaranteed place on selected programs at state universities, and admissions preferences for programs such as law, history, archaeology, art history, and international relations. For students applying to foreign universities – including the most demanding ones such as Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, and Dutch universities – olympiad laureate status is one of the strongest signals of a candidate’s academic potential.

It is also worth taking the long-term view. Success in a history competition of this standing opens the path to a good university, and a good university means a stronger network, better access to research programs and internships, and a first job in a prestigious environment. This is a domino effect that begins with a single decision – the decision to start training towards a specific goal rather than waiting for things to work out on their own. Looked at from another angle: even participation in the regional eliminations builds competencies that school cannot provide – confidence in oral presentations, disciplined work with texts, and the ability to construct extended written arguments. These are competencies that stay for life.

How we work – a methodology grounded in the panel’s real requirements

We run sessions individually, because every student comes with a different level of preparation, a different chosen specialization, and a different profile of historical interests. At the very first consultation we jointly establish a roadmap – an action plan spread over several months, tailored to the olympiad schedule and the student’s working pace.

Why do parents and students choose us?

  • We work on archived olympiad problems from previous editions, allowing the student to become familiar with the difficulty level and the panel’s typical assessment patterns.
  • We introduce academic literature that goes beyond the core curriculum – the student learns to read scholarly monographs, take notes, and extract theses for their own papers.
  • After every session we provide brief written feedback, so the parent has a clear picture of where the preparation stands.
  • We run oral stage simulations – the student faces a panel discussion covering their specialization, core curriculum, and set texts, so we train them under conditions as close to the real thing as possible.
  • We work on the drafting of written papers – from the initial idea and formulation of a thesis, through the structure of the argument, to polishing the language.
  • We analyze mistakes: after every practice paper we show where the argumentation breaks down, where sources are missing, and where the student could have developed the topic further.
  • We are available between sessions – the student can send a question, submit a section of their paper for quick feedback, or ask for literature recommendations.

This way of working gives the student what school most commonly lacks – the sense that someone genuinely knows the system from the inside and is guiding them step by step. The parent, in turn, sees concrete plans and predictability rather than vague assurances.

Scope of support within History Olympiad preparation

Within our program we provide the student with a full academic framework that allows them to focus on learning rather than independently deciphering the olympiad requirements. Our history olympiad preparation covers:

  • analysis of the material scope and tailoring the study path to the chosen specialization (antiquity, the Middle Ages, the early modern period, 19th and 20th century history, the history of parliamentarism, and others),
  • work on archived problems from school, regional, and central elimination rounds,
  • extended theory and an introduction to academic literature connected with the compulsory reading list,
  • substantive supervision of the written paper for the school stage (minimum 15,000 characters) – from topic selection, through the bibliography, to the final proofreading,
  • timed problem-based essay writing practice for the regional stage,
  • preparation for source analysis at the central stage,
  • a series of mock interviews before the oral section – with questions from the set texts, the specialization, and the core curriculum,
  • project consultations and ongoing support between sessions.

The History Olympiad as part of a broader educational strategy

At MonPat Education we view the olympiad not as a goal in itself, but as an element of a broader student development strategy. Success in the olympiad fits beautifully into the profile of a candidate for foreign universities – and that is where our true specialization begins. If your child is thinking about studying in the UK, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Denmark, or the United States, laureate status is a very strong argument in an application.

Our offer is comprehensive. After the olympiad phase we can move seamlessly into applications to universities in the UK, including our flagship Oxbridge program, in which we prepare the student for entrance tests such as the TSA Oxford or LNAT (for those targeting law), draft the personal statement, and run mock interviews with mentors who have themselves been examiners at British universities. We can also handle the language side of the application – preparation courses for IELTS Academic or TOEFL.

For students who enjoy competition and want to build a strong competition portfolio, natural complements may include other subject olympiads, including the English Language Olympiad and the Olympiad on Knowledge of Poland and the Contemporary World. We also provide tutoring support across all matura subjects – including history tutoring, if alongside the olympiad the student also wants to secure the extended matura result.

In other words: once a collaboration begins, it can encompass the student’s entire educational process – from the olympiad, through the matura, to gaining a place at the desired university in Poland or abroad. There is no need to search for additional tutors or application consultants – you will find everything in one place, within a coherent approach to guiding the student.

Book a free consultation

The first step is a conversation during which we get to know the student, their prior experience with history, their ambitions, and the calendar for the coming months. On that basis we will propose a concrete preparation plan for the history olympiad and – where needed – a broader educational strategy that looks well beyond the competition itself. The consultation is free and carries no obligation.
