About A-Levels
About the A-Levels — everything you need to know about the British education system
Choosing the right education system is one of the most important decisions in the life of a teenager and their family. Many parents and students ask themselves the question “what exactly are A-Levels and is it worth choosing this path?”. The answer is not obvious, because the British education system differs significantly from the Polish Matura and the IB programme. Without proper understanding, it is easy to make a mistake that may weigh on the entire academic future of the child.
At MonPat Education, we help families make an informed decision about choosing A-Levels and guide students through the entire preparation process — from choosing subjects, through learning according to the grading criteria, to applying to dream universities in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the USA. Our mentors, graduates of Oxford, Cambridge, and other top universities, know this system inside out and know how to turn good grades into a competitive advantage in admissions.

What are the A-Levels? Key information
The A-Levels (Advanced Levels) are the British state exam ending secondary school, equivalent to the Polish Matura. They are a gateway to admissions at higher education institutions in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States. They are also recognised by Polish universities, which makes them an extremely versatile choice.
The programme lasts two years and is delivered in “sixth form” mode (for students aged 16–18). In the first year (AS Levels), students usually choose 4 subjects, and in the second year they narrow the choice down to 3 in order to study them at an advanced level. Importantly, A-Levels are also available to adults with no age limit, which makes them a flexible option also for those who want to change their educational path.
Structure and course of the A-Levels programme
Students choose 3–4 subjects from a wide range covering the sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology), humanities (history, English literature, law), and social and artistic subjects. This teaching model allows for specialist in-depth study of selected fields, which is particularly valued by top foreign universities.
Final exams decide the ultimate result. The grading scale is as follows:
- A* — the highest grade, corresponding to a result of around 90–100%,
- A, B, C, D — subsequent grades reflecting the level of mastery of the material,
- E — the minimum passing threshold, corresponding to a result of around 40%.
In Poland, the A-Levels programme is offered both by international in-person schools and proven online education platforms. Students often combine remote learning with individual tutoring preparing for the A-Levels exam, which allows them to make the most of their academic potential.
Who are the A-Levels for?
The British system will work particularly well for students who:
- have a clearly defined career path and know which fields they want to develop (e.g. medicine, engineering, economics, law),
- plan to study in the United Kingdom, the USA, the Netherlands, Ireland, or other European countries,
- have completed at least 1–2 years of high school or technical school and are at least 16 years old,
- have a knowledge of English at a level of at least IELTS 5.5,
- prefer deep study of selected subjects rather than a broad general education programme,
- want to increase their chances in applications to Oxbridge-type universities, where grades of AAA or A*A*A are required.
Parents most often come to us when they notice that their child’s potential goes beyond the standard school programme, or when they want to consciously plan an application path to foreign studies several years in advance.
Differences between A-Levels, the Polish Matura, and IB — which system to choose?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions in our consultations. Each of these systems has its own strengths and answers different student needs.
A-Levels focus on narrow specialisations — the student chooses 3–4 subjects and studies them really deeply. This is an ideal solution for people with clearly defined academic interests.
The Polish Matura is general in nature — it covers a broad set of compulsory and extended subjects. It provides a solid foundation in many fields, but does not allow for such deep specialisation as A-Levels.
The IB Matura (International Baccalaureate) requires the study of 6 subjects from different subject groups and the completion of additional projects (Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, CAS). It promotes holistic student development. If you want to learn more about this programme, see our article About the IB DP International Baccalaureate.
The most important differences in brief:
- Number of subjects: A-Levels — 3–4 chosen; the Polish Matura — a wide set of compulsory and extended; IB — 6 from different subject groups plus projects,
- Style of study: A-Levels — specialist depth; the Polish Matura — general education; IB — holistic development,
- Grading system: A-Levels — A*–E scale; the Polish Matura — percentage results; IB — points from 1 to 7 plus additional points.
Why are A-Levels key for applications to top universities?
The A-Levels diploma opens the doors to the world’s most prestigious universities. It is the system that Oxford and Cambridge know and value the most — because it is their own standard. Russell Group universities, Imperial College London, LSE, or UCL treat A-Levels as a natural route of application.
Importantly — high grades alone are not enough. Top foreign universities check not only knowledge, but above all:
- depth of understanding of the chosen subject,
- the ability to think analytically and problem-solve,
- academic style of work and argumentation,
- preparation for entrance tests (e.g. TSA, MAT, LNAT) and admissions interviews,
- a coherent, well-thought-out candidate profile.
This is precisely why A-Levels are such an effective foundation — they allow the student to demonstrate in-depth knowledge in fields key to the chosen course of study. Better preparation translates into a better university, a stronger network of contacts, and greater career opportunities — it is an investment that pays off throughout a professional life.
Working methodology — why do parents and students choose MonPat Education?
Our approach to the A-Levels exam is based on individual matching, but above all on a methodology proven by hundreds of students who got into their dream universities.
We work on the basis of the official grading criteria and analyse past papers, so that the student knows exactly how the examiner thinks. After each session, we provide brief feedback — both to the student and the parent — so that it is clear on an ongoing basis what has already been mastered and what is worth working on. Between lessons we stay in touch and quickly answer questions, because we know that the feeling of continuous support is the foundation of effective learning.
The following are particularly important in our work:
- a clear action plan (roadmap) with set stages and goals,
- regular progress reports for parents,
- analysis of problem-solving live, in the style of academic tutorials,
- work according to specific grading criteria — we teach how to earn the maximum number of points,
- building the candidate’s self-confidence before key exams.
Many of our students initially understand the material but cannot translate it into high grades. Our tutors — often examiners themselves — show how to structure answers, how to write essays according to the markscheme, and how to avoid typical traps. The result? Greater control over the result, less stress, and a real increase in the chances of admission.

A-Levels as the foundation of applications to foreign studies
It is worth remembering that the A-Levels are only the beginning. Good grades alone do not guarantee admission to Oxford, Cambridge, or Imperial College London. That is why at MonPat Education we offer comprehensive application support, which naturally fits into preparation for the A-Levels.
If you dream of studying at the world’s most prestigious universities, see our flagship offer — Ivy League Plus Application and Studies in the United Kingdom. We help with the full application process: from choosing universities, through preparing documents, to admissions interviews. We also encourage you to look at the UK offer — grade analysis and university selection, which allows you to precisely match the choice of university to the student’s real potential.
For students planning to study outside the United Kingdom, we also have programmes for studies in the Netherlands, Ireland, Denmark, the USA, and Italy.
