Medicine in Italy – potential diagnostics

Medicine in Italy – potential assessment. Your path to Italian medical universities

The dream of studying medicine in English in one of the best European countries is within reach for Polish matura students today, but the path to the white coat leads through the IMAT exam – one of the most selective admissions challenges in Europe. Parents and students often face the same dilemma: excellent school grades do not automatically translate into admissions success, and the matura alone – even with the highest results – carries no weight at all when applying to medical studies in Italy taught in English. Only the entrance test result matters.

At MonPat Education we guide students through the entire process – from assessing the candidate’s real potential, through substantive and strategic exam preparation, to completing the application formalities. The first consultation is completely free and is designed to give you an honest picture of where your child currently stands, what their chances are, and how much work is needed to turn a dream into a realistic plan.

Who is this program for?

The medicine in Italy potential assessment is aimed at students in years 1–3 of secondary school and matura candidates (both Polish matura and IB and A-Level programs) who are planning to pursue medical studies in Italy. It is the right solution for those who want to study medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science in English at renowned universities such as La Sapienza in Rome, Università di Milano-Bicocca in Bergamo, the University of Bologna, Pavia, Humanitas, or San Raffaele in Milan.

It is also an offer for parents who want to be sure their child is being guided by people who know the system from the inside – people who understand what medical admissions in Italy genuinely look like, what pitfalls await candidates, and what admissions committees really expect. It is an investment not only in gaining a university place, but in the future career path and the environment in which the child will develop over six years of study.

Why is IMAT the only route to Italian medicine?

The Italian medical admissions system operates on the principle of numerus clausus – the number of places is strictly limited and ranking is determined solely by score. The IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) is a compulsory entrance test in English, held only once a year, usually in mid-September. It consists of 60 single-choice questions in 100 minutes, covering biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, logical reasoning, and general knowledge.

Crucially – the matura, personal statements, and references have no bearing whatsoever on the admissions decision. This is the only exam in the world where your result on a single day determines six years of medical studies. The maximum score is 90 points, but competition is fierce: a safe threshold is approximately 55–60 points, and the best public universities demand even more. Additionally, the system penalizes wrong answers – minus 0.4 points – which means test strategy is just as important as knowledge itself.

That is why we call this process a “potential assessment.” IMAT evaluates not only knowledge but also the candidate’s cognitive abilities – their way of thinking, speed of analysis, and resilience under time pressure. Many students with very good school grades are unsuccessful because they have never been trained in the style of tests with such specific characteristics. A strong IMAT result, on the other hand, opens not only the doors of Italian medical universities ranked in the global top 100 – it also builds lasting capital: a degree recognized throughout the European Union, an international network, and a significantly broader range of career paths after graduation.

How we work – a methodology that combines diagnosis with real preparation

We begin with a thorough diagnostic assessment. The first meeting is a free consultation during which we analyze the student’s current level of knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, their command of scientific English, and their working style under time pressure. On this basis an individual roadmap is created – a clear action plan with specific goals for each stage.

During preparation we work on authentic papers from previous years, develop test-taking strategies (when to answer, when to skip a question), train specialist medical vocabulary in English, and teach time management for 60 questions in 100 minutes. After every session the student receives brief feedback with specific identification of strengths and areas to work on, and parents receive periodic progress reports so they always know where their child stands.

Why do parents and students choose MonPat Education? Because we stay in contact between sessions – we answer questions, send materials, and respond quickly when uncertainty or pre-exam stress arises. Our mentors are graduates of leading universities worldwide, including Oxford and Cambridge, and in the case of IMAT preparation – people who have either been through this process themselves or have been teaching medical students for years.

Scope of support within the program

The “Medicine in Italy – potential assessment” service covers comprehensive preparation for the entire admissions process:

  • Candidate profile analysis – assessment of the current level of knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and English, identification of gaps, and a realistic IMAT score forecast.
  • Individual application strategy – university selection matched to the student’s potential, a plan covering both public universities (La Sapienza, Bologna, Milano-Bicocca, Pavia, Messina, Catania) and private ones (Humanitas, San Raffaele, Cattolica, Camillus).
  • Substantive preparation for IMAT – systematic work across the full test scope: biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, logic, and general knowledge at the level required by the exam.
  • Test strategy training – time management techniques, methods for eliminating wrong answers, and decisions about when to answer and when to skip a question given the negative marking system.
  • Language preparation – mastering specialist medical and scientific vocabulary in English and preparation for the IELTS Academic or TOEFL certificate required by universities (minimum B2 level).
  • Application formalities support – registration on the Universitaly platform, dichiarazione di valore from the Italian consulate, matura certificate recognition, and document compilation.
  • Mock tests under exam conditions – regular practice tests with full simulation of IMAT timing and scoring, with error analysis after every session.
  • Long-term plan – if we begin working with a student in year 1 or 2 of secondary school, we build a strategy spanning up to two or three years.

Medicine in Italy is part of a broader educational path

Applying for medicine in Italy is rarely a decision made in isolation. It often goes hand in hand with other strategic choices – the direction of development in secondary school, the choice of subjects for the Polish matura, IB, or A-Levels, and a plan B in case the IMAT result is not sufficient in the first round. That is why at MonPat Education we take a comprehensive view of every student.

If your child has not yet sat their matura, it is worth considering parallel support in science subjects – biology, chemistry, physics, or maths tutoring – as a solid school foundation greatly eases IMAT preparation. IB students can benefit from IB chemistry or IB physics tutoring, and those studying in the British system from A-Level Biology.

It is also worth remembering that Italy is not the only option for medical studies abroad. If your child is also considering Ireland, we offer the medicine in Ireland – potential assessment program, and for applications to British universities – preparation for the UCAT exam. Many of our students apply to several countries simultaneously, which significantly increases the chances of receiving the desired medical school offer.

Regardless of where the conversation begins – with chemistry tutoring or with a first question about IMAT – it is good to know that you have come to a company that provides complete support: from school level, through the Polish matura, IB, and A-Levels, to applications to the best universities in the world.
