Medicine in Ireland – potential diagnostics

Medicine in Ireland – potential assessment. Find out whether your child has a chance at Irish medical universities

The dream of a white coat and studies at one of the prestigious medical universities on the Emerald Isle is one of the most demanding educational goals in Europe. Medical studies in Ireland attract thousands of candidates from around the world, but admissions in this country work entirely differently from Poland – the matura alone, even with the highest results, is not enough. What matters is the combination of academic results, the HPAT-Ireland exam, and a mature, academic way of thinking.

The potential assessment at MonPat Education is the first, crucial step on the path to gaining a place to study medicine in Ireland. During the process we assess the student’s real aptitude for passing HPAT-Ireland, evaluate their admissions chances at specific universities, and build an action plan covering one to three years. As a result, parents and students know exactly where they stand – instead of acting in the dark, they receive an organized path with clear stages and measurable progress.

Our assessments are conducted by mentors who are themselves graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other leading universities worldwide, with an inside knowledge of medical admissions in Ireland. The first consultation is free – it is a good moment to talk about goals and plan the next steps.

Who is the medicine in Ireland potential assessment for?

The service is aimed at secondary school students (years 1–3) and their parents who are seriously considering medical studies outside Poland. It is particularly well suited to those who:

  • are studying in a Polish secondary school, an international IB class, or on an A-Level program and want a realistic assessment of their chances at Irish medical universities,
  • have good grades but are unsure whether their candidate profile is strong enough for the requirements of Trinity College Dublin, UCD, or RCSI,
  • have heard of the HPAT-Ireland exam but do not know how to prepare for it or whether it is worth investing in intensive preparation at all,
  • want a competitive advantage over other candidates and do not want to proceed haphazardly,
  • are considering several programs or several countries (e.g. medicine in Italy) and need an objective assessment of where their chances are greatest.

It is also the right solution for parents who are looking for a thorough, expert diagnosis before committing to an intensive, multi-year preparation process for a foreign application.

Why is a potential assessment so important when applying for medicine in Ireland?

The Irish medical admissions system is one of the most selective in Europe. Without passing the HPAT-Ireland (Health Professions Admission Test), applying to the six main medical universities in Ireland is simply not possible. Importantly, HPAT does not test knowledge of biology or chemistry – that is verified by the matura and school results. The test measures competencies that school typically does not develop systematically: logical thinking, empathy, understanding of interpersonal relationships, and abstract non-verbal reasoning.

The exam lasts 2.5 hours and covers three sections: Logical Reasoning and Problem Solving (approximately 44 questions in 65 minutes), Interpersonal Understanding (approximately 36 questions in 45 minutes), and Non-Verbal Reasoning (approximately 30 questions in 40 minutes). Candidates applying to the University of Limerick for postgraduate programs (occupational therapy, speech and language therapy) also sit an additional Written English section – two essays in 60 minutes. The maximum score is 300 points, and importantly there is no penalty for wrong answers, which significantly influences test-taking strategy.

The main universities requiring HPAT are: Trinity College Dublin (83rd in the QS 2025 rankings), University College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University College Cork, University of Galway, and University of Limerick. Each has its own score thresholds and its own way of combining HPAT and matura results – without knowing these nuances it is easy to make mistakes when choosing a university.

Why is it worth assessing potential before committing to full preparation? Because it is an investment that pays back in the long run. Better preparation leads to a better university, a better university means a stronger network, access to placements at the best hospitals, and naturally broader medical career opportunities – in Ireland, the UK, or in international research institutions. A decision made in the first year of secondary school can shape an entire professional journey.

How we work – an individual approach and specific feedback

The potential assessment at MonPat Education is not an online test with an automated result. It is a multi-stage process led by a mentor who knows the Irish medical admissions system from the inside. We begin with a thorough analysis of the student’s profile – grades, chosen subjects (biology and chemistry are key), motivation, extracurricular experience, and volunteering, which carries real weight in a medical application.

We then conduct a HPAT-Ireland sample test under conditions that simulate the real exam. After the test the student receives a detailed analysis – not just a total score, but a breakdown of results across each section, identification of areas requiring work, and specific recommendations for next steps. After every session we provide brief feedback, and the parent receives a progress report so they are always up to date on where their child stands.

Why do parents and students choose us? Because they receive more than just a diagnosis. They get access to a person who answers questions between sessions, a clear action plan (a roadmap for the coming months or years), real examples from other students’ admissions processes, and the sense that they are not doing this alone. The peace of mind that comes from having someone guide the process who has already taken dozens of students through an application is, for many families, the most important value we offer.

Scope of support within the potential assessment

Within the service you receive a comprehensive assessment of readiness to apply for medical studies in Ireland:

  • student profile analysis – grades, aptitudes, strengths and weaknesses, extracurricular experience relevant to a medical application,
  • HPAT-Ireland exam simulation under conditions close to the real test, with an analysis of results from each of the three (or four) sections,
  • university selection – a realistic assessment of which of the six Irish medical universities offer the greatest chances and what needs to improve to increase them,
  • application strategy – a concrete action plan with milestones for the coming months or years,
  • recommendations regarding matura subjects and any additional courses (e.g. an HPAT exam preparation course, IELTS or TOEFL language courses),
  • candidate portfolio building – medical volunteering, shadowing, and experiences that admissions committees genuinely take into account,
  • a one- to three-year plan covering matura preparation, HPAT, and any additional application elements.

The assessment is just the beginning – comprehensive support throughout the entire application process

The potential assessment is the first, crucial step – but after it, the real work begins. Students who decide to continue their preparation with us have access to the full educational infrastructure of MonPat Education. If it turns out that your child needs to strengthen their biology or chemistry, we offer biology tutoring, chemistry tutoring, and specialist courses for IB and A-Level students.

For those who discover at the assessment stage that their chances improve with an international matura, we offer full IB matura preparation, which significantly eases admissions to Irish medical universities. Comprehensive application support – from strategy to formalities – can be found in our Ireland studies application assistance service.

The first consultation is free. It is a good moment to talk about goals, check whether getting into medicine in Ireland is a realistic scenario for your child, and plan the first concrete steps.
