IB Mathematics Tutoring

IB mathematics tutoring – a confident result in the international baccalaureate and a passport to your dream university

Mathematics in the International Baccalaureate programme is one of the most demanding subjects faced by students at bilingual and international secondary schools. The difference between “I understand the topic” and “I can write an answer to the markscheme” can cost up to two grades on the IB scale – and when applying to universities abroad, every point matters. On top of this comes the pressure of the Internal Assessment, time management during the exam, and the choice between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation. IB mathematics tutoring at MonPat Education is an organised plan that transforms the chaos of preparation into a predictable, stable result – and consequently into a genuine chance at universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial College, or the best programmes in Poland.

We work with students on what the examiner actually awards points for: precise reasoning, correct mathematical notation, the ability to model problems, and confident use of a graphical calculator. Our tutors are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other leading universities around the world who have themselves been through the IB programme and know exactly what assessors look for. The first consultation is free – it serves to get to know the student, diagnose their strengths and weaknesses, and propose a realistic work plan.

Who is IB mathematics tutoring for?

Our offer is aimed at students of the Pre-IB programme and the IB Diploma Programme who need support in mastering the material at SL or HL level – regardless of whether they are following the Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation course. Both students who are working towards a grade of 5 or 6, and those aiming for a perfect seven and a place at an Ivy League, Oxbridge, or top-ten QS World University Rankings institution benefit from our support.

We particularly recommend IB mathematics tutoring for students who:

  • feel that they understand the topic in class but cannot write the solution correctly in the exam paper according to IB criteria,
  • are preparing the Internal Assessment (the mathematical exploration accounting for 20% of the final grade) and need a mentor to guide them through the methodology, structure, and mathematical reflection,
  • have chosen HL AA as a prerequisite for programmes such as mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, or quantitative economics at Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, ETH Zurich, or TU Delft,
  • have chosen HL AI with data science, business, finance, or social sciences with a strong analytical component in mind,
  • need to catch up after a weaker year in Pre-IB or in the first year of the DP,
  • want to improve their result from an already-sat IB exam – in which case we also invite them to explore our IB resit offer.

We also support parents, who are often encountering the IB structure for the first time and do not fully understand how the predicted grades system works, how diploma points are calculated, and how these translate into admissions at Polish and foreign universities. We clarify all of this during the initial consultation.

Why does IB mathematics matter so much?

The IB mathematics exam is one of the most frequently required subjects in international university admissions – and one of the most common reasons for rejection of candidates who otherwise had an excellent profile. Without a high result in HL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, a candidate for Natural Sciences at Cambridge, Engineering at Oxford, or Mathematics at Imperial College London has practically no chance. The same applies to applications for economics at LSE, Bocconi, or Erasmus University Rotterdam.

In the Polish system the situation is equally clear-cut: the IB diploma is recognised at the Jagiellonian University, the University of Warsaw, SGH Warsaw School of Economics, and other leading institutions, and a grade of 7 in IB mathematics converts to 100%, 6 to 86–90%, and 5 to 71–75%. For programmes such as mathematics, computer science, economics, or finance, the difference between a grade of 5 and a 7 is often the difference between a reserve list and a place at the desired university.

It is worth thinking about this in the long term. A better IB mathematics result is not just a passport to a better university. It also means a stronger academic network, access to more selective scholarship programmes, better internship prospects at investment banks, consulting firms, or research laboratories – and consequently greater career opportunities. An investment in solid preparation at secondary school level frequently pays back many times over in the first years after graduation.

Our methodology – why parents and students choose MonPat Education

Our approach to the IB mathematics exam is built on three pillars: thorough knowledge of IB criteria, work on real past papers, and individual pace adjustment to each student. Every session begins with a clear goal – we do not work “on the topic” but on a specific skill that translates into points in the exam paper.

After every lesson the student receives brief feedback with a list of tasks for independent work, and the parent receives information about progress and the areas we will be working on in the following week. Between sessions we remain in contact: if a student gets stuck on homework the evening before a test, they have someone to contact. This sense of continuous availability is what parents most frequently mention when we ask why they stay with us long-term.

In practice, sessions focus on:

  • markscheme analysis – the student understands how the examiner thinks and exactly what earns M (method), A (accuracy), and R (reasoning) marks,
  • training in writing answers to IB criteria, with emphasis on full mathematical notation and correct justifications,
  • systematic work on past papers from recent May and November sessions, in conditions close to the real exam,
  • modelling solutions to typical problems from Paper 1, Paper 2, and – in the case of HL – Paper 3 with advanced problems,
  • comprehensive mentoring on the Internal Assessment – from topic selection, through structure and methodology, to mathematical reflection and presentation of results,
  • predicted grade optimisation and building a revision strategy for the final months before the exam session.

The parent sees measurable progress, receives regular summaries, knows what stage the child is at, and has confidence that someone genuinely knows the system from the inside. The student, in turn, gains something that is hard to put a price on – confidence before the exam.

Scope of support in IB mathematics tutoring

As part of IB mathematics tutoring we provide:

  • comprehensive exam preparation at SL and HL level, in both the Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation variants,
  • Internal Assessment mentoring – with support at every stage of the mathematical exploration,
  • intensive work on past papers with error analysis and problem-solving strategies,
  • predicted grade optimisation, which is critical for UCAS applications and conditional offers,
  • an individual revision strategy plan for the final weeks before the May 2026 exam session,
  • pre-exam support – short pre-examination consultations and a discussion of typical traps in Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3,
  • help in choosing the right mathematics variant and level – a decision that should be consciously linked to the intended degree programme (more on this in the subject selection section of the international baccalaureate).

If the student has not yet entered the programme, we invite them to explore our IB secondary school preparation offer and pre-IB online tutoring, which makes the start of the DP significantly smoother.

IB mathematics as a foundation for applications to universities abroad

It is worth remembering that IB mathematics tutoring is for most of our students only one element of a much broader puzzle. A high result in the international baccalaureate is the foundation, but universities at the very top – Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, Bocconi, and Ivy League institutions – also look at the candidate’s personality, their personal statement, entrance test results (TMUA, MAT, STEP, SAT, ACT), and the outcome of their admissions interview.

That is why the natural extension of our tutoring is the flagship Oxbridge and Ivy League Plus programme, in which we guide the student comprehensively through the entire application process. Students heading to the United States make use of the Top 50 university application programme and the SAT course. Students planning quantitative programmes in the UK often combine IB mathematics with TMUA, MAT, or GMAT courses. Candidates for medicine abroad, meanwhile, turn to IMAT, UCAT, or HPAT.

At the first, free consultation we assess not only the student’s mathematical level, but also their ambitions and the direction they want to go in. This means we can immediately show what results will realistically be needed and how to structure a work schedule for the coming months. This approach – treating IB mathematics as one element of an application strategy rather than a subject taken out of context – is what sets MonPat Education apart from conventional tutoring.
