IB IT tutoring

IB computer science tutoring – solid preparation for the International Baccalaureate and science-based degree programmes

Computer science in the International Baccalaureate programme is a subject that combines theory with practice — it requires both a sound knowledge of algorithms and IB-format pseudocode and the ability to design a working application for the Internal Assessment. Many students have an excellent grasp of the subject matter but do not know how to write answers to the mark scheme or how to structure an IA that meets all the assessment criteria. Parents, meanwhile, are often unfamiliar with the IB programme structure and grading system, which makes it difficult for them to assess realistically whether their child is on track for a grade 6 or 7.

IB computer science tutoring at MonPat Education addresses exactly these problems. We work with students at both SL and HL, guiding them through Paper 1, Paper 2, and the Internal Assessment — all so that the IB computer science examination stops being a source of stress and becomes a solid foundation for university applications. The first consultation is free of charge — it serves to assess the student’s level, discuss their goals, and propose a study plan.

Who is IB computer science tutoring for?

Our offer is aimed at students at IB Diploma Programme schools and their parents who want to be confident that their child will not be left to face the most demanding elements of the International Baccalaureate alone. IB computer science tutoring is particularly well suited when:

  • the student feels the gap between “understanding the topic” and actually writing to the IB criteria, and is losing marks despite solid knowledge of the material,
  • the Internal Assessment deadline is approaching and the project still lacks a clear structure, a research problem, or a planned implementation,
  • the student has chosen computer science at HL and needs greater depth in algorithm complexity, data structures, and a more advanced project,
  • predicted grades are lower than the requirements of the universities to which the student plans to apply,
  • a parent wants visibility over progress and a clear picture of the stage their child has reached in their preparation.

We also work with pre-IB students who want to enter the programme with a strong foundation — you can read more about this stage in the pre-IB online tutoring section.

Why does IB computer science matter for a student’s future?

Computer science sits within the sciences group of the IB programme and is one of the most frequently chosen subjects by students considering science and technology degrees. A strong grade in the International Baccalaureate computer science examination — particularly at HL — is a clear signal to universities that the candidate can think algorithmically, design solutions, and work on real programming projects.

For many degree programmes this result provides a genuine admissions advantage. We are talking in particular about:

  • computer science, applied computing, and intelligent systems at universities in Poland and abroad,
  • computer engineering, electrical engineering, automation, and robotics,
  • programmes combining computer science with mathematics, physics, or economics (such as computer science & economics or mathematics & computer science in the UK),
  • programmes in data science, AI, and cybersecurity.

The IB as a programme is demanding and highly regarded by universities abroad — it confers an advantage in applications to universities in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, and the United States. The long-term logic is straightforward: better preparation for IB examinations leads to higher predicted grades, which open doors to stronger universities; a stronger university means a better network, better internships, and in the longer term a genuinely stronger career. Tutoring is not only an investment in the grade for one subject, but in the entire starting point of adult life.

Our approach — how we guide a student from the first session to the examination

We treat every student individually, but within a tried-and-tested framework for working with the IB programme. We begin with a diagnostic of the student’s level, analysis of recent school tests, and identification of the areas that have the greatest impact on the result — typically specific mark-scheme criteria where the student is losing marks, alongside gaps in pseudocode and algorithm analysis.

During sessions we work on past papers, discuss model solutions, and practise writing answers in the way an IB examiner assesses them. We dedicate separate time to the Internal Assessment: we help the student choose a sensible problem (one that can be well documented and implemented), plan the structure of the documentation, and work through the design, implementation, and testing phases. After every session the student and parent receive brief feedback — what was covered, what went well, and what we are working on next.

Why do parents and students choose us?

  • our tutors are graduates of Cambridge, Oxford, and other leading universities who have themselves been through the IB programme or examine in comparable systems,
  • the study plan is clear from the first meeting — it is known what we are doing this week, this month, and in the lead-up to the examination session,
  • we stay in contact between sessions — if a question arises about the IA project or a more challenging piece of homework, the student does not face it alone,
  • we work from specific mark-scheme content and past papers, which translates into more consistent predicted grades,
  • the first consultation is free of charge — we begin working together only when both sides see the value in continuing.

What IB computer science tutoring covers

As part of IB computer science tutoring we cover all the key elements of the programme and examination:

  • preparation for computer science at SL and HL, with the depth of material matched to the chosen level,
  • work on Paper 1 — algorithms, IB-format pseudocode, fundamentals of computer science theory, analysis of computational tasks,
  • work on Paper 2 — the option chosen by the school (e.g. databases, object-oriented programming, computer networks), contextual and design-based questions,
  • comprehensive IA mentoring: problem selection, documentation structure, design, implementation, and testing to the IB criteria,
  • past papers, modelling solutions, and training in writing answers to the IB criteria,
  • predicted grade optimisation — targeted work on the areas that raise the grade most quickly,
  • revision strategy planning and support during the intensive period immediately before the examination.

If the student is also taking other IB subjects, we can extend the collaboration seamlessly — our offer includes IB mathematics tutoring, IB physics tutoring, and dedicated support with the Internal Assessment as well as Extended Essay and TOK support.

IB computer science is just the beginning — comprehensive application support

A strong computer science grade in the International Baccalaureate is an excellent starting point, but international admissions tests far more than grades alone. Universities look at depth of understanding, analytical thinking, the quality of the personal statement, and performance in interviews. Even a strong IB diploma is often not enough on its own if the candidate’s profile has not been built with care.

For this reason, at MonPat Education we treat tutoring as part of a larger whole. Students who begin with us on a single subject often naturally go on to use our support for applications to universities in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, or Denmark. For students targeting the most selective universities we have a dedicated Ivy League Plus programme and a US top-50 university application service. We also assist with selecting admissions tests (such as the TMUA), language qualifications (IELTS Academic, TOEFL), and mock interviews.

In other words: by starting with IB computer science tutoring, the student immediately enters an environment that thinks about their pathway over several years — from the first IA, through the examination, to the decision about which university and degree to choose. If you would like to discuss a specific student’s situation and plan the first steps, book a free consultation — we will assess where you stand and identify what will have the greatest impact in the months ahead.
