A-Levels history tutoring
A-Levels History tutoring — the path to prestigious universities abroad
History at A-Level is much more than memorising dates and names. It is the ability to analyse sources, build argumentation, and conduct academic discussion — competencies that Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, and UCL expect from candidates. Many students know the material but lose marks because they don’t know how to write essays according to British grading criteria. This is the biggest trap of this exam.
At MonPat Education we run A-Levels History tutoring based on official exam markschemes (Edexcel, AQA, OCR, Cambridge International). We help students organise their knowledge, master the technique of writing source-based essays, and develop the critical thinking that genuinely translates into results around A and A*. Our mentors are graduates of Oxford, Cambridge, and other top universities — many of them have taught history in the British system and know it “from the inside”.
The first consultation is free — it’s a good moment to talk about predicted grades, application plans, and assess what is really worth improving.

Who is our A-Levels History tutoring for?
Our offer is used mainly by students of international schools in Poland and abroad, as well as people preparing independently for A-Level exams. Parents and students most often come to us when:
- predicted grades are lower than the student’s real potential and there is a risk that they will not allow the student to meet the conditions of an offer from their dream university,
- the student understands the material but can’t translate knowledge into marks in essays and source-based answers,
- there is a lack of stability of results between AS and A2 levels,
- the student plans humanities, law, economics, or political science studies (including History, PPE, Law, International Relations) at universities in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, or the USA,
- the parent is looking for a mentor who will help their child build the profile of a strong candidate — not just pass the exam.
We work both with students who are just starting the programme and with those at the finish line who need intensive revision before the summer session.
Why is A-Level History so important in applications to foreign studies?
History is one of the so-called “facilitating subjects” — subjects particularly valued by Russell Group universities. Without it (or without a subject of comparable analytical weight), it is difficult to apply for courses such as Law, History, Philosophy, Politics and Economics, or International Relations at Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, or Durham. What’s more, a good history result is a strong signal to the admissions committee: the candidate is able to analyse sources, argue, and write academically — i.e. exactly what the British tutorial system expects.
The long-term perspective also counts. Better A-Level results open the door to universities in the top rankings, and these in turn build a network of contacts, access to internships at international institutions, and real career opportunities — in diplomacy, law, investment banking, strategic consulting, or academic research. Solid preparation in history is not just one exam, but an investment in the first ten years of your child’s professional path.
It is also worth remembering that A-Level History works perfectly with other subjects in the candidate’s portfolio — especially with A-Level English, A-Level English Literature, and A-Level Law.
How we work — methodology based on exam criteria
Our work with the student does not consist of “going through successive chapters”. Each session has a clear exam goal and refers to the official grading criteria of the given exam board. We work on past papers, discuss model answers, and show how the examiner thinks — because our tutors have often played this role themselves.
In our methodology, we put emphasis on:
- analysis of historical sources — we teach how to recognise context, the author’s intentions, the limitations of the source, and how to build a marks-earning answer from this,
- A-Levels essay-writing technique — from thesis, through argumentation, to counter-argument and conclusions; we work on the PEEL structure and more advanced academic models,
- in-depth work with AS and A2 topics — with different levels of difficulty depending on the stage,
- developing critical thinking in political, economic, and social areas — a competence assessed both in exams and in admissions interviews,
- planning a revision strategy — so that the student knows what to revise, in what order, and how to distribute effort before the exam session.
Why do parents and students choose us? After each session, the student receives brief feedback with specific recommendations, and the parent — clear information about progress and the next steps. Between lessons we stay in touch: we answer questions about essays, materials, or doubts before a test. Each student has an individual work plan tailored to their exam board, course of study, and pace of learning. We conduct lessons in person or online — in our experience, the hybrid format often works best, especially for students going abroad.
Scope of support in A-Levels History tutoring
We tailor our support to the stage the student is at and their application goal. Most often it includes:
- analysis of the student’s profile and diagnosis of gaps in knowledge and writing technique,
- work with the specific exam board (Edexcel, AQA, OCR, Cambridge International),
- preparation for AS and A2 exams — with an emphasis on practical exercises,
- analysis of past papers and modelling answers according to the markscheme,
- individual correction of essays and source-based answers,
- revision strategies and time management in the exam,
- building an academic writing style, useful later in the application and at university,
- a long-term 1–3 year plan for students thinking about applying to foreign universities.
A-Levels History tutoring and applications to foreign studies — the Oxbridge Programme
A solidly passed A-Level History exam is an important step, but in applications to universities at the top of the global rankings — Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial College, UCL — it is only the basis. What also counts is the Personal Statement, preparation for entrance tests (e.g. LNAT for law, TSA Oxford for social science courses) and mock interviews in the Oxbridge supervision style. Many students with a 6 in chemistry or 40 IB points think this will be enough. It is not enough — admissions committees assess depth of understanding, academic working style, and the ability to think problem-solve.
That is why A-Levels History tutoring is a natural element at MonPat Education of the wider path that we offer as part of the Oxbridge Programme and comprehensive support in applying to studies in the United Kingdom. Within this programme we conduct mock interviews, repeatedly correct the Personal Statement, help in choosing universities, and build a “top-tier candidate” profile. If you are considering grade analysis and university selection in the UK or an application to other countries (the Netherlands, Ireland, USA), let’s talk about it now — the sooner we start, the stronger the profile we will build.
Do you want to find out how A-Levels History tutoring fits into your application plan? Book a free consultation — we will analyse the current results, the university goal, and propose a specific course of action.
Whether your goal is A-Level History at an A* level, an application for History at Cambridge, or simply solid preparation for humanities studies — we will help you achieve it in an organised way, without chaos or randomness. Because at MonPat Education we believe that good preparation is not a matter of luck, but of strategy.
