It is an offer for students who already have very strong mathematical foundations \u2014 meaning they are confident with the extended matura curriculum, A-level Mathematics, or IB Math AA HL \u2014 and want to move up to tasks that are clearly more demanding than school examinations.<\/p>\n<p>In practice the course is well suited when:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the student is planning to study mathematics or computer science in the United Kingdom,<\/li>\n<li>they are following the <strong>IB or A-level<\/strong> programme and want to use it as a platform for applications to top universities,<\/li>\n<li>they lack experience with olympiad- and admissions-style tasks, where reasoning matters more than following a template,<\/li>\n<li>they want to work with someone who knows the Oxbridge admissions system from the inside \u2014 often from the perspective of an examiner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Parents most commonly come to us when they can see that their child has excellent mathematics grades but hits a wall when they first attempt past MAT papers. This is natural \u2014 the examination has been deliberately constructed to differentiate candidates beyond school level.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the MAT matters so much for applications<\/h2>\n<p>If a student is aiming for mathematics at Oxford, <strong>the MAT result is one of the key shortlisting criteria<\/strong>. Oxford rejects thousands of candidates with perfect grades every year, because it is the admissions examination \u2014 alongside the personal statement and interview \u2014 that reveals how a student thinks under pressure. The average scores of candidates invited to interview are noticeably higher than the average for all applicants, and among those who receive offers they are higher still. Without solid preparation it is difficult to be in that group.<\/p>\n<p>It is also worth noting the context: <strong>from the 2026 admissions cycle, Oxford replaced the MAT with the TMUA<\/strong>, used jointly with Imperial College and Cambridge. The mathematical competences and way of thinking that the MAT demands translate directly to the TMUA \u2014 so working through our course builds a foundation for the new format as well. This is a skill that only develops through working with someone who has sat the examination themselves and knows what an examiner is looking for.<\/p>\n<h2>What the course covers<\/h2>\n<p>As part of the MAT course we work on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the full <strong>MAT syllabus<\/strong> \u2014 pure mathematics, algebra, sequences, geometry, trigonometry, logarithms, combinatorics, differential and integral calculus,<\/li>\n<li>strategies for answering multiple-choice questions under time pressure,<\/li>\n<li>constructing complete, logical solutions to open-ended tasks \u2014 here the examiner assesses the quality of the argument, not only the final answer,<\/li>\n<li>analysis of past papers (2007\u20132025),<\/li>\n<li>mock exams under conditions as close as possible to the Pearson VUE platform,<\/li>\n<li>work on systematic errors (where the student loses marks despite having the right idea),<\/li>\n<li>pace of working \u2014 one of the most common reasons for a lower score is underestimating the time needed for longer tasks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Every plan is tailored to how much time remains before the examination and the student&#8217;s starting point. A course begun a year before the application looks different from intensive preparation three months before the examination date.<\/p>\n<h2>MAT is part of a larger whole \u2014 a comprehensive application pathway<\/h2>\n<p>An admissions test is one element of an Oxford application, but not the only one. Even a very strong MAT result will not guarantee a place if the <strong>personal statement does not demonstrate academic maturity<\/strong> and the candidate is not prepared for the interview. For this reason, the MAT course at MonPat Education most commonly connects with broader application support.<\/p>\n<p>If the student is aiming for mathematics or related programmes in the UK, the natural extension is comprehensive support with applications to universities in the United Kingdom and the currently required TMUA preparation course.
